Description

LEONARD ORVI'LLE NICHOLS, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO RACHEL C.
SILL, OF WATERTOWN, ILLINOIS. I
LIGHTING DEVICE.
Application filed August 16, 1915.
My invention relates to lighting devices,
and it embodies a receptacle for spherical, or substantially spherical, matches, means for removing said matches one by one from the receptacle, and frictional means for lgniting the matches in their passage from the case.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying'drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view, partly in elevation, of the device with its lid closed.
I Fig. 2 is a similar view with the lid open. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the device with the lid removed. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line 1VIV of Fig. 2, with the lid removed.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section, partly in elevation, of a holder constituting an important'feature of the invention. Fig. 6 is a cross section on line -VL-VI of Fig. 5.
Referring in detail to the several parts, 1
designates a case provided with a removable bottom 2 and a hinged top or lid 3. The lid 3 is normally held in closed position by a spring latch 4: secured to the front inner side of the case 1, and a lip 5 on the front inner side of the lid 3. The latch 4: is provided near its upper end with a thumb piece 6, projecting through a hole in the front side of the case 1, so that it can be I pressed backward by the thumb to release W the latch 4: from the lip 5. When the latch i is released from the lip 5, the lid 3 is automatically thrown to open position, Fig. 2, by a spring 7 and a link 8, which latter is pivoted at one end to the spring 7 and at its' opposite end to a lug 9 soldered or otherwise fixed to the inner rear side of the lid 3. The spring 7 is secured to the inner rear side of the case 1 by suitable means, such for instance asrivets 10.
11 designates an irregular shaped partition which divides the upper portion of the case 1 from the lower portion thereof. Said partition 11 has an outlet orifice 12, in its front wall of sufficient size to permit the passage of the spherical matches A. .one by Specification of Letters Patent.

one. A guide plate 13 leading to the orifice 1 2 is fixed in the upper portion of the part1t1on 11, to guide the matches to said orifice When the case 1 is inverted.
l4: designates a holder fixed to the under forward portion of lid 3 and normally closing the orifice 12, to prevent the passage of the matches therethrough. The holder 14;
consists of a stationary jaw 15 fixed to a shank 16, and a movable jaw l'l'secured to a sleeve 18 slidably mounted upon said shank 16. The shank 16 is rigidly secured to the lid 3 and'has a shoulder 19 against .which the sleeve 18 is normally held by a spring 20, fixed at oneend to the upper portlon ofthe shank 16 and connected at its opposite end to an eye 21 on the upper end of the sleeve 18, having a bifurcated extension 22 for abutment against a slide 23, provided with a thumb piece 2 L extending through a slot 25, in the front wall of the case 1.
26designates a shutter slidable against the front side of the partition 11 to close the orifice 12 therein. Said shutter 26 is slidable in oppositely-disposed grooves 27, formed between the front wall of the partition 11 and a pair of oppositely-disposed fillers 28,
which extend from the top of the case 1 to a suitable distance below the orifice 12 to guide the matches between. the jaws 15 and 17, as. said matches pass out through the orifice.
30 designates an expansion spring interposed between the upper end of the shutter 26 and a lug 31, which latter is secured to the front wall of'the partition 11.
32 designates an abrasive element arranged in the path of the matches to ignite the same as they are carried out of the case by the holder 14. Said abrasive element 32 is secured at its lower end by a pivot 33 to a plate 34, soldered or otherwise fixed to the top of the partition 11. A spring 35 secured at one end to the plate 34 and'at its opposite end to the abrasive element 32 is provided to yieldingly-hold said abrasive element 32 in the path of the match,
The operation briefly stated, is as follows: The removable bottom 2 is taken from the case 1, which is then loaded with the matches A, after which said lid is replaced to retain the ma ches in the case. When a light is desired ."le case is inverted to cause a match orifice 12. The movable jaw 17 is then retracted to'allow the match to pass between the jaws by pushing downward on the thumb piece 2st. On releasing the thumb piece 2 the jaws are made to firmly grasp the match throu 'h the action of-the spring 20. The thumo piece '6 is then pressed inward to disengage the latch 4L from the lip 5, whereupon the spring 7 suddenly throws the lid 3 open. is the lid swings to open position the match is carried outward by the jaws l5 and 17 and in contacting the abrasive element 1?), ignited anl produces a flame of sullicient duration to light a. cigar or other article. As the holder 1 lsWings outward with the lid 3, the orifice 12is instantly closed to prevent the passage of other matches therethrough by the shutter 26, which is advanced across said orifice 12 by the spring 30 until its forwardly projecting lower end 26 contacts the adjacent ends of the fillers 528, Fig. 41.
From the foregoing: description, it is apparentthat I have produced a comparatively sim'ple -and inexpensive device well adapted for the pn pose intended, and while I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I reserve the right to make such changes in the construction, ar-
rangement, and combination of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having thus described my uvcntion, what I claim and desire. to secure by Letters lat out, is:
1. In a. devic of the charm-tier described. a match receptacle. a lid hinged to said rcceptaclc. means carried by said lid for grasping matches one by one and carrying them from the case when the lid is opclicd. an abrasive clement arranged in the path of the matches as they leave the case. and resilient means for vieldingly holding said abrasive element in the path of the matches.
In a device oi the character described, A
a match receptacle, a lid operably connected to said receptacle a shank connected to said lid and provided with a jaw. a sleeve slidable on said shank and provided with a jaw to coact with the first jaw in grasping matches one at a time and carryingthem from the case when the lid is opened, and yielding means tending to press the second jaw toward the first jaw to securely hold a match between said jaws.
