It will be observed that in this form should the li htcr fail or the light be blown out by t e wind, it will be unnecessary to close the cap to make a second attempt at a light. The yieldable element 4 will reciprocate to its original position and the device will then be ready for a second attempt.
In a modified form of the invention, as shown in Figure 7, I do not actuate the crank 10 by means of the yieldable element 4 which, however, is still employed to hold or release the cap 2 which is hingedly secured to the body 1 as at 17. Instead, I employ an arm link 19 having an end secured to the cap 2, and its opposite end formed with a loop 16 which engages the crank. As pressure on the yieldable element 4 releases the cap 2 through the catch 6 and notch 7, the yieldable element 23 forces the cap into open position and maintains the cap in this position until the cap is manually closed again where it is normally held under tension by the spring or yieldable element 23. As the cap flies open the arm link 19 which is secured to the cap ulls the abrader member 8 through an arc y means of the crank 10, and the abrader member face 8, being in frictional engagement with the pyrophoric material in the holder 11, causes a spark which ignites the fuel saturated wick 22.
The invention is susceptible to many changes in its proportions, form and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. In a friction lighter in combination, an abrader element supported in proximity to a holder for pyrophoric material, said abrader element acting in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the bore of said holder for pyrophoric material, a crankshaft connected with said abrader element and having a bent portion disposed between bearings, and means including an elongated aperture engaging the bent portion of said crankshaft to actuate said crankshaft and said abrader element by movement of said means.
2. In a friction lighter in combination, a pivotally mounted abrader element, a holder having a. bore therein to hold pyrophoric material, said abrader element acting in a. plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the bore of said holder for pyrophoric material and having on its side adjacent the orifice of said bore of said holder an abrading surface, a crankshaft connec ed with said abrader element and having a bent portion disposed between bearings, and means including an elongated aperture engaging the bent portion of said crankshaft to actuate said crankshaft and said abrader element by movement of said means.
3. In a friction lighter, the combination of an elongated casing, spark producing members supported by a head of said casing at one end thereof, means to hold a wick in proximity to the spark producing members,
said sparkproducing members including an abrader element acting in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the bore of a holder provided with pyrophoric ma terial, a crankshaft connected with the abrader element and having a bent portion disposed between bearings, a cap mounted at one end of said elongated casing to cover and uncover said spark producing members, a yieldable lever element secured to said casing and provided with an elongated aperture to engage the bent portion of and to actuate the crankshaft and also provided with means wherewith to releasably hold said cap in closed position, and means acting on said cap to force said cap open when said cap is released by pressing said yieldable element.
4. A friction lighter including the combination of an elongated casing including a fuel chamber, a wick, means to hold the wick leading from said fuel chamber to a position in proximity to spark producing members, spark producing members supported by the head of said casing at one end thereof, said spark producing members including an abrader element acting in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the bore of a holder for pyrophoric material and a holder for said pyrophorio material, a spring held in said bore to hold said pyrophoric material in engagement with said abrader element, a crankshaft connected with the abrader element and having a bent portion disposed between bearings, a cap mounted at one end of said elongated casing to cover and uncover said spark producing members, a yieldable lever element secured to said casing and having a lower yieldable portion to act as a pocket clip and an upper yieldable portion including an elongated aperture providing means to engage the bent portion'of and combinedly actuate the crankshaft and notch means adapted to coact with said yieldable upper portion and said cap to releasably hold said cap in closed position. and means acting on said cap to force said cap open when said cap is released by pressing the upper portion of said yieldable lever element.
5. A friction lighter including the combination of an elongated casing including a fuel chamber having means at one end thereof to hold in removable engagement an elongated handle for at least one tool, a wick leading from saidfuel chamber, spark roducing members supported by a he of said casing at one end thereof, means to hold an end of the wick in proximity to the spark producing producing members including a holder for pyro'phoric material and an abrader element acting in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the bore of the holder of pyrophoric material, a spring held in said bore to hold said pyrophonc material in engagement" with said abrader element, a crankshaft connected with said abrader element and having a bent portion disposed between bearings, a cap including notch-catch means mounted at one end of said elongated casing to cover and uncover said spark producing members, having a lower yieldable portion to act as a pocket clip secured to said casing and also including an upper yieldable portion including an elongated aperture to enga e the bent portion of said crankshaft, a catc provided upon said upper portion to cooperate with the catch of said cap to releasably hold the cap in closed position, and yieldable means acting upon said cap to force said cap open when said catches are disen aged by pressing the upper leverportion 0 said yleldable lever element.
