Be it known that I, JOHN A. CUNNING- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bethlehem, in the county of VNorthampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Match-Lighter, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to household articles and more particularly to match lighting devices.

The primary object of the invention is to provide means for containing a match, together with means for forcing the match' from the container, to cause the same to ignite.

A further object of the invention 1s to provide a device of this character which will guard the match, to insure against a broken lighted end of a match dropping onto the Hoor, and causing fire.

A still further object of the invention 1s to provide means for supporting the match after the same has been lighted, so that the match may be held to the burner to be ignited thereby, by the lighting device, thus eliminating any chance of the operator being burned.

With the foregoing and other objectsin view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings Figure 1 illustrates a longitudinal View through a match lighter constructed in accordance with the present invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the body of the match lighting device, and includes a .relatively wide strip of metal having its side edges curved toward each other to provide a tubular portion, the upper portion of which, being cut-away as at 6, provides means to permit a match to be inserted into the body.

Disposed adjacent one end of the body 5, is an opening 7, which opening 7 accommodates the right angled member 8,A whichhas A such as to insure the edge 9 'contacting with the extreme endof a match being lighted.

The side walls of the body 5 adjacent one end thereof extend upwardly as at 10, to provide ears, which ears are apertured as at 11, and accommodate the pin 12, which pin 12 lies in a position above the path of travel of a match passing from the body 5, and supports the coiled spring 13 kcoiled around said pin 12, one end thereof being rigidly secured to one of the ears, so that one end of the spring is prevented from movement with relation to the central portion thereof, the opposite end of said spring is curved as at 111, and contacts with the underside of the pivoted arm 15, which has depending portions 16 apertured as at 17 to accommodateportions of the pin 12, so that the member' 15 is normally held in position as indicated in full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the forward portion of said member 15, as shown supports the member 8, the same being secured thereto by means of the pin 17.

One end of the body 5 is partially closed by the disk 18, and provides an abutmentV for one end of the coiled spring 19, which has one of its ends extending through the opening 2O formed in the disk 18 so that one end of the spring is secured thereto, the opposite end of said spring being rigidly secured to one end of the plunger 21, so that movement of the plunger 21 toward the open end of the body 5, causes the spring to expand, under the pressure exerted on the plunger 21. It will thus be seen that when pressure directed to the plunger'21, is

relieved, the coiled spring 19 causes the plunger 21 to return to the positionasindicated by Fig. 2 of the drawing, whereupon the plunger is in a position to permit a n match to be inserted in the bodyV 5.

The outer end of the plunger 21 is shown as bent at right angles to the main portion thereof, as at 22, to provide a thumb rest, to facilitate the operation. of the plunger to cause the lighting of a match.

In operation, a match is inserted in the opening 6 of the body, the head of said matchV being disposed adjacent the member 8. The plunger 21 is now forced through the body 5, by pressure exerted from the member 22, by the thumb of the operator, the match contacting with the serrated edge 9 of the member 8, whereupon the match is lighted, the coiled spring 13, causing the extreme lower edge of the member 8 to contact with the body of the match for securing the same to the device, until the match has lighted the burner to which the same is aplied.
