Description

THOMAS A. TAYLOR.
Improved ice-Pick and Breaker.
NO. 118,070. 4 I Patented August 15, 1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS A. TAYLOR, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT lN ICE-PICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,070, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. TAYLOR, of Ban gor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Ice-Pick and Breaker; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will-enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which are shown Figure 1, a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a section of same.
Same letters show like parts.
The object of my invention is to remedy some of the defects of the common ice-pick, which consists of a round pointed picker inserted in a wooden mallet. This is apt to become loose and drop out of its socket, and the instrument does not possess the weight necessary to break large cakes of ice. The rounded point also tends to chip the ice up in small pieces, causing much waste.
My improvement consists of a metallic head, I), cast around a steel point, a, of flat wedge-like shape. The point a being thus inserted during shaped pick splits the ice instead of powdering it up into small pieces.
To assist in retaining the pick a in place the portion entering the metal head may be roughened or dovetailed, as shown in Fig. 2, and the metal of the head, cooling and contracting around it, holds it immovably in place. A handle, 0, is inserted, as shown, in the head I).
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. The improved icepick, as herein described, having the flat pick a inserted in the metallic head I), substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
THOS. A. TAYLOR.
