To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. Mosns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio` have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Plate-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This inventionrelates generally to plate holdersfor cameras and more particularly to an indicator to be used in connection with a double plate holder forthe purpose of indicating whether one or both of 'the plates have, or have not been exposed. y
It frequently happens in taking photographs that the operator mistakes an exposed for an unexposed plate or vice versa, and as a consequence, numerous plates are ruined by double exposure, and the object of my invention is to provide an indicator by means of which the operator can be informed whether or not either one of the plates have been exposed, and if so, which one, and also whether or not both of said plates have or have not been exposed.
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a device which can be used in connection with any of the well known types of plate holders now in use.
llVith these objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims. y
- In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 a sectional elevation showing the manner of operating the device. Fig. 8 is a sectional plan on the line 3 3 of Fig. '4. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken through the v. plateholder and indicator in the position shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan view showing one position of the indicator. Fig. 6 is a similar view showing another position of the indicator. Fig. 7 is a View illustrating a still further indicating position. These positions indicate to the operator in each instance, the plate. which has been exposed, and theplate which has not been exposed.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I employ the usual construction of plate holder, comprising a rectangular shaped frame 10, into which the plates are placed and covered by means of slides 11;
the upper ends of said slides being provided as usual with handle portions, by means of which the said slides are moved into and out of the plate holders for the purpose of covering or uncovering the plate as desired. A shank or pin 12 is inserted inv one end of the plate holder midway between the handle portions of the slides and adjacent the ends of said handle portions. This shank or pin 12 is intended to turn or rotate, and 'if desired, can be held against withdrawal by the employment of a bifurcated or notched plate l13 secured by a screw 14 to the end of the plate, it being understood that the shank 12 is reduced or grooved to receive the bifurcated or notched portion of the plate 13. However, this fastening means may be dispensed with, and the shank held in the socket in the end of frame by frictional contact only. The shank 12 is constructed with a head 15 which projects slightly above the adjacent edges of the slides, and pivotally mounted upon the head 15 of the shank 12 is an indicator, knob or button 16, the central portion of said knob or button being cut away to receive the head of the shank, and a pivot pin 17 passes through said knob and head in order to provide the pivotal connection between said knob and head of shank. The knob or button being connected in this manner can be turned back and forth on the shank from one position to another as most clearly shown, and in order to maintain said knob or button in any one of its adiusted positions, I provide said knob or button with a central recess 18, in which is arranged a coil spring 19, bearing against a plug or pin 20, thereby providing spring frictional contact between the knob or button and the head of shank so that when the said knob is turned to a vertical position as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, it will be maintained in such position, and when shifted to a` horizontal position in either direction as shown in Figs. 1, 5, 6 and 7, it will be held in such horizontal position.
Upon .one side of the indicator knobor button 16 is marked the word Not and upon the reverse side in heavy characters are the letters Exp7 thereby making a decided contrast not only in the word, but also in the character of the letters, the word Not being in light outline letters, while the letters Exp denoting exposed are printed in solid black letters.
In operation, when the plates are in the holder and neither one has been exposed, the knob or button is turned transversely across the handles of the slides and bent down inwardly displaying the Word Not and indicating that both of the plates have not been exposed. Vhen it is desired to use one of the plates, the knob or button is turned through an angle of 90 degrees bringing the knob or button over the other slide, as indicated in Fig. 5. The uncovered slide is then removed, and after said slide has been put back into the plate holder, the hook 10a (loca-ted near the right hand end of Fig. 1) is turned over the slide, and the indicator is left in the position above described. Now, when it is desired to expose the other plate, the indicating knob or button is turned over to the position shown in Fig. 6, indicating that that plate, on which it rests, has been exposed. leaving the other one blank and ready for use. After the second plate has been exposed and the slide returned to the holder, the indicating` knob or button is turned as shown in Fig. 7 so as to extend across both slides and as the letters Exp are uppermost it will indicate to the operator that both of the plates have been exposed. It will also be noted that when so turned it will be toward the ends of slides or just the reverse of its position shown in Fig. l, and consequently, the operator can tell by the position of its knob. as Well as by the marks thereon, the conditions of the plate Within the holder. It Will, of course, be understood that other forms of knobs may be employed and other forms of connections between the shank and knob devised; and in illustrating my invention I have chosen one form of such devices as illustrating the manner of carrving out my invention, but it is obvious that certain changes and modifications can be made within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the broad principle of my invention.
The indicator occupies the upright position shown in Figs. Q and 4 While the plate holder is being loaded, and in such position Will not interfere in the least with the removal or insertion of the slides.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. An indicator attachment for plate holders comprising a shank adapted to be attached to a holder, and a knob pivotally connected to said shank, said knob having indicating marks on the opposite faces thereof, and spring means carried by said knob for maintaining the same in an adjusted position.
2. In a device of the kind described, a. plate holder provided with slides, and an indicator attached to the holder, said indicator` comprising a shank and a knob, said shank being rotatable and the knob being pivoted for the purpose set forth.
3. In a device of the kind described, a plate holder having slides, and an indicator comprising a shank and a knob, said knob being pivoted upon the shank and bearing indicating marks upon opposite sides as set forth.
4. In a device of the kind described, a plate holder having slides and an indicator comprising a shank rotatably secured in said holder and a knob pivotallv connected to said shank and having indicating marks upon its faces, said knob being provided with means for maintaining it in its ad justed position with reference to the shank.
5. In a device of the kind described, the combination of a plate holder having slides, of an indicator comprising a shank rotatably attached to said plate holder, and a. knob pivotally connected to said shank, said knob having indicating marks on the opposite faces thereof, the central portion of said knob being recessed, and a spring pressed pin located in said recess and adapted to bear against the shank for the purpose set forth.
6. In a device of the kind described, a plate holder having slides, and an indicator connected to said holder, said indicator comprising a shank and a knob pivotally connected to the end of said shank. said knob being adapted to be rotated and turned so as to occupy any indicating position desired as set forth.
7. In a device of the kind described, a plate holder having slides, and an indicator attached to said plate holder, said indicator comprising a shank mounted in one end 0f said holder and adapted to rotate longitudinally with reference to said holder, and a knob or button carried by the end of the shank and adapted to turn both longitudinallv and transversely with reference to said holder.
