Description

NrrEn STAE STEPHEN D. JONES, OF BLUE ISLAND, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTING-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,020, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN D. JoNEs, of Blue Island, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in LiftingJacks 5 and I do decla-re that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specitication, in Which- Figure l is a side elevation ,of my invention, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section on the line a x of Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference made use of in the severa-l figures indicate like parts.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same With particularity, making use in so doing` of the aforesaid drawing.
A is an upright standard supported by a base or platform, B, which, if desired, may be mounted upon small Wheels or casters for convenience in moving' about. O is movable or sliding fulcruin placed in front of the standard, and connected thereto by a iiXed clamp or slide, d, clasping into the vertical grooves D, one upon each side of the standard. A bail-shaped pawl, E, is pivoted to the standard at the point e, and surrounds the fulcrum O and engages with its ratchet or notched face F, furnishing a means whereby the fulcrum may be adjusted to any 'desired height Within the limit of the mechanism to suit various sized vehicles or other objects to be lifted. G is a lever, mortised, as indicated by dotted lines, to fit over the standard and fulcrum, and pivoted to the fulcrum at g. This lever is iitted with a check-pawl, H, which engages with a ratchet, I, upon the rear face and upper extremity of the standard, and serves to hold the lever in position after the lift is made.
-The lifting-jack so constructed affords a simple, cheap, and exceedingly durable device, capable of being adjusted to any sized vehicle without any detachment of its parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The 'combination of the standard A having grooves D, the fulcrum C, clasps d, bail-shaped paWl E, ratchet F, lever G, pawl H, and ratchet I, all constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown. 4
