IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING-BEDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.118,018, dated August 15, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, JOHN JOHNSON, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Spring-Bedsof which the following is a specification:

My invention consists in a newv arrangement for hanging an end piece in that class of springbeds which has canvas bottoms or other bottoms of similar make, and of a new arrangement of springs in connection therewith.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end of a side rail, showing the castings which support one end of an end piece. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the saine parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said parts being at the head of the bed and the observer beingat the foot.

From the top of the corner block, and in one piece With it, rises the standard 1,011 the outward sigle of which is the cylindrical spur d', which forms a bearing for end block e, Whose upper part, c1 el c1, forms the bed for one end of the Wooden end piece, to which the canvas stretcher is attached by screws or in some other proper manner. This end block e has an arm, e2, all in one piece With the rest of the block, extending along till its extremity overhangs the Wooden spring j', which is attached to the inside of the side rail a. This Wooden spring extends down nearly the Whole length of the side rail c, and is doweled to it about the center of its length, and again at the extremity furthest removed from the end block e, leaving the endwhich comes up under the arm e2 free to act as a spring. It is, of course, made of some Wood proper for this purpos'e. The under edge of the arm e2 is rounded off and fits into a corresponding seat in the-metal cup i, Which has on its under side a small pin, o, itting into a corresponding orifice in the top of the spring j'. There are more than one of these holes, so that the bearing ofthe arm e2 upon the spring can be adjusted to the Weight of the persons who sleep upon the bed.

I have thus far described the fittings for but one end of the end piece to which the canvas is to be attached. Of course Jdie opposite end of said en d piece has the same kind of iittin gs. The end piece which has these iittings can be placed at the head or the foot of the bed. The canvas at the opposite end can be strained by any ofthe common devices in use for this purpose--a drum provided with ratchet and plane or any other device which .answers the purpose. Both end and side rails are to be fastened by screws or the like into their sockets in the corner blocks b.

I claim as my invention- 1. The rocking end piece, designed for attachment to the canvas stretcher, pivoted at its ends and provided with arms e2 at either or both ends, overhanging and bearing upon the springs j', substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the arms c2 with the springs f by means of the adjustable cap i, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
