RICHARD It. FOOTE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN'DEVICES FOR RAISING LETTERS ON METAl. PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 118,005, dated August 15, 1871 antedated August 11, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD R. FOOTE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Raising Letters on Metal Plat-e; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being' had to the accompanying drawing and letters marked thereon making a part of this specification, in Which- Figure l represents a metal die as arranged for raising letters on a thin metal plate; Fig. 2, a plan view of the elastic bed on which the thin metal plate is put 5 Fig. 3, asection of the parts previously mentioned in position as when the letters are raised.
The nature of the present invention consists in gluing or fastening block letters to the face of a thick piece of metal and then placing the thin metal plate 011 which the letters are to be raised on a suitable elastic bed and then clamping the thick plate and elastic bed together, so as to raise the letters ou said thin plate, as the Whole .is hereinafter fullyspecified.
A represents a thick metal plate on which the letters I, I, I, ne., are fastened by any suitable adhesive, as, for instance, Spaulding-s glue, said letters having such a thickness as will correspond with the required depth of the letters to be raised on the metal plate B, and being beveled so as not to break said plate at the edges where the letters are formed. After the letters are properly secured to the thick plate A I take ordinary rubber belting of suitable size and lay it upon the bed of a strong press; put the plateB on it, and the die A on the top of the latter plate, and then use such force as will raise the letters, as shown at I, Fig. 3. I use the aforesaid belting because it retains its elasticity and can be used indefinitely with the same die.
By this means I am able to raise letters in a superior manner Without the use of a cast die and matrix. Thus, When only a single sign is Wanted it canbe furnished, which is not now the ease, as the dies cost too much.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The plate A provided with the raised letters I I, Snc., fastened to it temporarily, in combina-tion with the elastic bed B, for raising letters on metal plate by clamping said plate between the said letters and bed, as set forth.
