SIDNEY STIFFSON,- OFNEW YORK, .N. Y.
COMBINATION MERCHANDISE BOX AND DISPLAY RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 18, 1916- Application filed April 2, 1915. Serial No. 18,708.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY s'rrrrson, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, Manhattan borough, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Merchandise Boxes and Display Racks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. ..This invention relates to a combination merchandise-box and display rack, the object being to provide a box or receptacle for merchandise such as neck-ties, suspenders or other articles, which are usually displayed in shop-windows (5r by salesman, the boxbeing so arranged that it can be used as a display tray to exhibit or advertise the goods. By means of the goods'to an extent that would disarranging thereof. In my arrangement of box and retainer, the goods are always in a conhandling cause so1l1ng or .dition to be displayed without being removed-from the .retainer therefor which is arranged, when folded, to be compl'etely incased by folded with the retainer.
I will now" proceed to describe my invention in detail, the essential features of which:
will be summarized in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement (the bottom of the box being broken away) arranged for displaying purposes; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectionalview J of the box and foldedretainer therein arranged for transportation; Fig. 3 is a front view of a modified form of retainer; and
4 is a top end view thereof.
My invention consists of a box 1 having a cover 2 removable therefrom. The goods or merchandise carried by the box are mounted upon a retainer 3 consisting of the, foldably connected leaves or members 4 and 5.- Each member 4 and 5 is provided with aplurality of horizontally disposed slots or openings 6 and 7 between which is located a bar 8., which serves to hold the merchandise in position. In this instance the bars 8 are illustrated as retaining neck-ties 9 and 10 and suspenders 11- which are passed through the slots 6 and 7 and over the apex 12 of the members or leaves 4 and 5.
my improvement, a saving ofv space is effected as well asthe avoidance of .the box, the merchandisebeing Oneof the features of my improvement consists of an extension '13 flexibly connected to the retainer-member 4 at 14. The function of the extension 13 is, when the retainer is opened for use as shown in Fig. 1, to provide a gutter or channel 15 in which the ends of the ties, or other articles held by the container, will lie, instead of projecting over the edge of the box. That portion of the container carrying the extension 13 will be the display portion, and, for the sake of simplicity, I will term that part of the retainer, or member 4, the front, the wall 16 of the box being the front wall. As will be seen in- Fig. 1, the edge 17 of the rear retainer-member 5 rests in contact with the rear wall 18 of the box 1 when theretainer is extended for use, and the front edge of theextension 13' rests in contact with the front wall 16; hence the retainer 3 is well braced when extended.
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate another form of retainer-members, one only being shown. In
designated by 19) with a plurality of straps or bars 20 which are, at one end, pivotally secured, as at 21, to the retainer member by eyelets or otherwise; The opposite end of each bar 20 carries a socket 22 to engage or snap onto a catch 23 carried by the retainer-member 19. To mount the. merchandise upon the retainer, one end of the bars 20 can be released and swung upwardly as shown by dotted lines 24 (Fig. 3)" or bent outwardly. After the articles have been placed upon the retainer the bars 20 can be again latched into place, thereby holding the articles carried by the retainer firmly clasped.
Having now I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
described my invention, what In combination with a box, a separate removable retainer for merchandise arranged for extension for d1splay purposes consisting of integral foldably connected members,
of said retainer members having an integral tended without disturbing such merchanfoldable extension along its freeend adapted dise. 10
for slidable contact with the bottom of the Signed at New York city, Y. this 1st box and to contact with the front Wall of the day of April, 1915.

when merchandise is placed between the re- Witnesses: spective slots, the retainer members, having MAURICE BLOCK,
such merchandise, may be folded or ex- EDWARD A. JARVIS.
