JOSEPH W THOMAS, 0F EVANSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO LEONARD I J'. HARTTMANN, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA;
PLOW-BEAM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
' Application filed June 22, 1915. Serial No. 35,611.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn W. THoMAs, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plow-Beams, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to plow beams, and it has particular reference to metallic plow beams and standards.
Metallic plow beams and standards are I usually made integral, there being no provision for lateral adjustment of the beam with respect to the standard to avoid side draft.
The present invention has for its prime object to produce a metallic beam and standard which are separably connected and relatively adjustable.
A further object of the invention is to produce simple and improved connecting and assembling means for a metallic plow beam and standard.
A further object of the invention is to produce simple and improved connecting and assembling means whereby the beam may be secured at various adjustments relatively to the standard.
With these and other ends in View which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a plow beam and standard constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View, dotted lines being employed to illustrate a different adjustment of the plow beam relatively to the standard. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1 through the clip that connects the forward end of the standard with the beam. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line l4 in Fig, 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the clip ,ormember used to establish connection between the standard and the rearward end of the plow beam.
Corresponding pairts in the several figures are denoted bylike characters of reference.
The beam 15 and the standard 16 are connected together by means of a U-shaped clip 17, the bridge piece of which engages an aperture 18 at the forward end of the standard, and the limbs of said clip being threaded for the reception of nuts 19 that are tightened against a clip plate 20 that extends transversely across the plow, which latter is included between the limbs of the clip 17.
The connecting member B which serves to connect the standard adjustably with the rearward end of the plow beam comprises a head 21 provided near the ends thereof with downwardly extending side flanges 22 at the ends of which are formed downwardly extending lugs 23 adapted to engage the side faces of the standard with which the member B is connected by a bolt 24: passing transversely therethrough and through the lugs 23. The head 21 is offset from the rearward face of the standard by the flanges 22, and said head has a longitudinal slot 25 through which a bolt 26 extends upwardly, the head 27 of said bolt being accommodated between the flanges 22, the rearward face of the standard and the under face of thehead 21. Said bolt 26 also extends through an aperture 28 in the downturned rearward end of the beam 15 with which it is connected by a nut 29.
It will be seen that when the parts are assembled, and the nut 29 is loosened, the beam will be free to rock to a limited extent between the limbs of the clip 17, thus causing the bolt 26 to slide in the slot 25. This provides ample latitude for the lateral adspeedily and effectually corrected by the improved construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. A plow beam having a downturned rear end, a standard, a U-shaped clip connecting the forward end of the standard with the beam, a connecting member secured on the standard and having a slotted head spaced from the rearward face of the standard, and a bolt engaging the slot and eX- tending through the rearward end of the beam with which it is connected.
2. A plow beam having a downturned rear end, a standard, a U-shaped clip connecting the forward end of the standard with the beam, a connecting member secured on the standard, said member comprising a slotted head having flanges engaging the rearward face of the standard from which the slotted head is thereby oflset, said member being also provided with lugs engaging the side faces of the standard, a bolt extending transversely through said lugs and the standard, and a bolt extending through the rearward end of the beam and having a tightening nut, said bolt being provided with a head engaging the slotted head of the connecting member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
