WILLIAM L. PAUL, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR T0 OLIVER CI-IILLEID PLOW I/VORKS, OF SQUTI'I BEND, INDIANA.
ROLLING COLTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. May 27, 1910.
Patented Feb. 14, 1911..
Serial No. 563,804..
T 0 (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lViLLIAiL L. PAUL, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling Colters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in rolling colters and more particularly to such as are adaptable for use with engine gang plows.
On gang plows, and particularly on engine gangs, trouble has been experienced by the rolling colters which must be left free to caster while working but which have a tendency to swing into the wheels or other parts of the plow when the plow is raised, thus causing trouble in the free manipulation and often resulting in breakage.
The object of my present invention is to obviate the difficulties above mentioned and to provide yielding means which will permit the colter to follow the line of draft or to allowan obstruction to pass between it and the plow, but which will operate to hold the colter and prevent it from swinging laterally when the plow is raised so as to avoid conflict between the colter and other parts of the plow structure.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a colter structure embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a plan view partly in section.
1 represents a cranked standard to be connected with a plow beam by means of any suitable clamp. Upon the lower clamped end of the standard 1, one end of a yoke 2 is loosely mounted and the arms of this yoke are provided near their free ends with bearings for the accommodation of the hub 3 of a rolling colter 1.
Below the swiveled yoke 2, a bracket 5 is clamped to the cranked portion of the stand ard 1 by means of a bolt 6 and this bracket is provided with an upwardly projecting arm 7 which terminates between the arms or members of the yoke 2 a comparatively short distance behind the swiveled mounting of said yoke on the standard 1. A horizontal belt or rod 8 passing through the arm 7 at or near the free end thereof and encircling this bolt at respective sides of the arm 7 are two springs 9 which hear at their inner ends against the arm '7 and at their outer ends against a head 10 and a nut 11 respec tively, on said bolt and engaging the arms or members of the yoke 2.
During the normal operation of a plow to which my improved colter is attached, the springs 9 will permit sufficient swiveling or castering of the colter to cause the latter to properly follow the line of draft or to avoid obstruct-ions, but when the plow is raised, these springs will operate to prevent swinging of the colter and consequent engagen'icnt of the latter with other parts of the plow structure,-said springs having such strength as to hold the yoke 2 and the colter carried thereby stationary except when pressure is applied to said coltor.
hen it is desired to adjust the coltcr laterally, this can be readily accomplished by first loosening the clamp which connects the standard 1 with the plow beam; then loosening the bolt 6 which clamps the bracket 5 to the standard, and then turning said standard in the first mentioned clamp and adjusting the bracket 5 correspondingly until the arm 7 is centrally disposed between the members of the yoke 2. The clamping bolts will then be tightened to hold the parts in position. In order to prevent displace ment of the yoke 2 and bracket 5 on the standard 1 during the making of the adjustments above alluded to, a cotter pin 11 is passed through the lower portion of the standard below the bracket 5.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is.-
1. The combination with a standard, a yoke swiveled thereto, and a rolling colter carried by said yoke, of an arm secured to the standard and entering between the members of the yoke, and springs between said arm and the respective members of the yoke.
2. The combination with a standard a yoke swiveled thereto, and a rolling colter carried by said yoke, of an arm secured to the standard and terminating between the members of the yoke, a rod passing transversely through said arm and provided at its ends with heads to engage the members of the yoke, and springs on said rod between the heads thereon and said arm.
3. The combination with a cranked standard, of a yoke swiveled to the cranked lower portion of said standard, a rolling coiter mounted in said yoke, a bracket adjustably secured to the standard adjacent to the yoke and provided with an arm terminating between the member of the yoke, and springs disposed between said arm and the members of the yoke. I
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
