Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,809, dated August 8,1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID O'riro PARKER, of Liverpool, in the county of Queens, in the Irovincc of Nova Scotia, have invented certain Improvements in Cradles for Children, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to a cradle, constructed in such a m anner as to be very light, and adapted alike for common use in the family and for parents or nurses to carry with them when traveling with a young child, and which, when not in service, may be readily folded into a small compass and be laid aside, which purposes are effected by its peculiar construction.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cradle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end section of the same. The dotted lines show the direction in which the sides and bottom fold together. Fig. 3 is one end, showing how the ends are hinged and fold together. Fig. 4L is a-n inside view of one side, showing the position of the ends when the cradle is together. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of o1 ie hinge with apart of the sides and end attached, sh owing the peculiar construetion of the hinges whereby the ends themselves, being folded together, may then be folded onto the sides lor opened at pleasure. Fig. 6 is a section ofthe bottom with the lower surface turned up. The dotted lines indicate the position ofthe rockers. T is a folding-brace, one of which is on each rocker. When the eradleis together these braces hang plumb from the bottom of the cradle.

In my invention the bottom, sides, and ends are each in two pieces, joined with hinges, for the purpose of folding them together or opening them at will. In. A B and A B are the sides, hinged at I so as to fold them togetherin the direction indicated by the dotted lincsN. Thebottom and sides, when all folded together, present the form of an end seetion, as indicated by the dotted lines A B C C B A. The ends are hin ged in the middle, inside, so that the two parts may be folded together as represented in Fi 0'. 3. One end of the upper part of each end of the cradle is attached to the upper side pieces with hinges, as seen in the perspective, Fig. 5. The hinge is something shorter than the width 0f the pieces to which they are fastened. At the junction of the ends and sides the hinges are bent to right angles and the joints in the hinges are distant from the said right angles about the thickness ofthe material of which the ends of the cradle are made. This is that the ends may be folded together, as iu Fig. 3, and then the folded ends themselves be folded onto the sides when folding up the cradle. The other ends and sides are connected and disconnected by the metallic fixtures represented at b b of Fig. 3, which enter at a c c c of Fig. 4. Vhen the cradle is together the lower parts of the ends, represented at J, Fig. 2, press snugly against the bottom O O and the sides B B, thereby keeping' the upper parts of the ends in their places, and also the bottom an d sides in their places. In Fig. et the lines A GVl A G indicate the position of the ends when the cradle is together. The rockers are secured by the folding braces represented at T, of Fig. 6, and by being notched a little into the outer edges of the bottom. The rockers are put in their places by partly folding the bottom, together. As in the cradle in ordinary use, the lower parts ofthe sides diverge but, unlike it, the upper parts are plumb and have their surfaces parallel. The same is true of the ends. f

I claim as my invention- The construction of a cradle, having the parts A I and A B composing its sides, and the parts O C composing its bottom, each and all combined as indicated in Fig. '2 of the drawing, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
