DANIEL MATER, JR., OF BELLMORE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND HA MATER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSESHE-NAIL CLlNCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,793, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concewz:
Be it known that I, DANIEL MATER, JR., of Bellmore, in the county of Parke and State of Indiana, have in\'ented a new and useful Improvcment in Horseshoe-Nail Olincher; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a convenient tool for clinching horseshoe-nails after they have been driven into the hoof; and it consists in the construction and arrangenient of two jaws pivoted together, and operated by means of a curved lever, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a side view, and Fig. 2 an edge View of the tool. Fig. 3 shows the tool applied.

A is a leVer-jaw, nearly straight7 with its inner edge serrated, as seen in Fig. 1. B is a short curved serrated jaw, jointed to A at the point O. D is the serrated face of the lever-jaw A, and E is the face of the short curved jaw. F is a lever which works on the fulcruin G, the fulcrum-plates H H being firmly attached to the lever-jaw A. I I are bars which connect the end of the face E with the short jaw B. The lever F is curved at its forward end, so that when its shank leaves the lever-jaw A the short jawis thrown outward, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The manner of application is seen in Fig. 3.
The face of the lever-jaw is engaged with the head of the nail, while the face of the short jaw is brought down onto the protruding point of the nail by means of the lever F, and with any required degree of force, thus clinchiug the point of the nail down firmly into the hoof without hammering or disturbing the horse, besides peffecting a Very material savin g in time.
The advantages of this improveinent must be obvious to all.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The lever-j awA, the curved jaw B, curved lever F, fulcruin G, and connecting-bar I I, combined and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes described.
