Be it known that I, EUGENE D. DUMOND, a
citizen of the United States'of America, and a resident of Tater-loo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in washing machines, andthe objects of my improvements are, first, to providean improved actuating mechanism for the vacuum stirring head or'plunger of such a machine, and second, to associate with such mechanism: other mechanism also driven thereby for rotating the rotary tub. These objects I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 4 is an enl-argedi side elevation of the cam-casing and its connections to the plunger-shaft. Fig. 5- is: aside elevation of the cam-casing and cam, with the side plate removed.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts' throughout the several views.
My improved washing machine has a rotatable tub 32"whose upper end is flanged outwardly at 34,. with the flange resting upon a plurality of roller-bearings seated in a depending ring 35 fixed to the under face of the tub top 42.. A ring 33 is fixed within the top of said tub to reinforce it at that place. The machine has legs 48 connected by cross bars 49. The top 42 is supported onsaidi legs, and has an: oblong opening provided with a closure 43 supported on the hinges 4'4, and having l detachable catchmembers 45 and 46, to detachably secure it to said top. 7
Referring to Fig. 2, the numeral 4 denotes a horizontal plate supported on standards 6 and 51, said standards rising from a baseplate fixedly, said plate having integral tubular part depending through an opening in the top 42 to act as a bearing for the plunger-sleeve 2. The sleeve 2 is slidably mounted upon a rod or fixed shaft 3 depending for a. distance from the under side of said plate Specification of Letters Patent.

The numeral 7 denotes a cam-casing of .0b-' long form, provided on one outer face with vertically-spaced orificed lugs 8 and 9.- The plunger-sleeve 2 passes through the alined orifices of said lugs, and acollar 10 is secured on said sleeve just abovethe lower lug 9, by means of a set-screw 11. The lugs'8 and 9 are mounted slidably on said sleeve 2.
A coiled spring 12 is mounted on'said sleeve between the collar 10'and the upper lug 8 to engage both. The cam-casing 7 has an open'right-hand end closed by means of a faceplate 13, orificed to receive the rotary shaft v16 which latter has a circular cam 14 fixed on its end within said casing. Ari'antifriction ring 15 is mounted rotatably about the circumferential edge of said cam to form anti-friction contacting means against the inner walls of said casing. The horizontal shaft 16 has its other end mount ed in the bearing 19 on the machine top '42, and carries a sprocket wheel 17. The top 42 has an oblong opening 47 below the sprocket-wheel 17. Y A cross-bar/ll secured in the lower part of the machine-below the tub- 32, has a short upright body 40 with an upwardly opening therefor sprocketadaptedtoreceive a depending W shaft 38 extending axially from'said tub and resting upon an anti-friction ball 39. bevel gear-wheel 37 is mounted on,the--bottom of the tub coaxially with said shaft. A horizontal shaft 21' has its left-hand end mounted in a bearing opening in the body 40 andhas a bevel pinion 42 secured thereon and in mesh with the wheel37. The righthand end of said shaft ismounted in abearin'g opening in a hanger-52, and carriesa sprocket-wheel 20. connects the two sprocket-wheel's 17 and 20, passing through the opening 47 in the machine top 42. shaft-29- has itsleft-hand 7 endrotatably mounted in a bearing in said hanger 52, while its right-hand end' is mounted in a bearingin a cross-piece 50 connected between two of the legs 48.- On said shaft are secured a relatively small sprocketwheel 30 and a fly-wheel 31, the sprocket-wheel intermeshing with sprocket-chain 18. A socket 25, containing a hand lever 28, is pivoted at 26 to a lug 27 on the machine frame. A curved link 23 is pivotally connected between a stud 24 on A 1 sprocket-chain 18 said socket 25, and a crank-pin 22 on the sprocket-wheel 20.
IVhen the hand-lever is oscillated, the link 23 rotates the sprocket wheel 20, so that the chain 18 causes the rotation of the pinion 30 and fly-wheel 31, and also the sprocket wheel 17, shaft 16 and cam-wheel 14. The fly-wheel is driven at a higher rate of speed than the sprocket-wheel 17 and cam-wheel 14. The rotating shaft 21 causes the pinion 42 to rotate the bevel-gear 37 and tub 32 at a relatively low speed. The cam-wheel 14, as indicated in Fig. 5, imparts a vertically reciprocating movement to the cam-casing 7.
Referring now to Fig. 4, it will be seen that when the cam-casing 7 descends, its lug 8 will bear against the yieldable spring 12 in pushing down the sleeve 2 and plungerhead 1. In case that any of the contents of the tub 32happento be bunched up under said plunger-head 1, said spring 12 will yield enough to prevent the head from tearing or injuring the'fabric. When the cam-casing rises, its lug 9 engages and lifts upon the collar 10 fixed to the sleeve 2, thereby carrying up the plunger-head to its upper limit of movement. The tension of the spring 12 may be varied by adjustably securing the collar 10 upon said sleeve 2.
In the operation of the machine, the tub 32 is rotated simultaneously with the upand-down reciprocation of the plungerhead 1, which is of the vacuum type. Said plun-,
ger-head, being oscillated in said tub eccentrically relative to its axis, acts successively upon the contents of the tub as the latter rotates, and thus agitates and manipulates said contents very thoroughly.
Various changes may be made in the details of the mechanism, their form, dimensions and arrangement, without departing from the principles of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. 2. In a washing-machine, a frame, a tub mounted therein, a fixed shaft depending into said tub, a sleeve slidable on said shaft and provided with a fixed stirring-head on its lower end, a cam-casing connected to said sleeve movably and resiliently to cushion the stirring-head on its down-stroke only, a rotatable cam mounted in said casing and adapted to oscillate it with said sleeve and stirring-head and means for adjusting mesh with said sprocket-chain and adapted to rotate the fly-wheel more rapidly than either of the said sprocket-wheels, and operative elements connected between the counter-shaft and said reciprocatory body adapted to reciprocate the latter.
