Description
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
NICHOLAS DENNY, OF SARANAO, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN ANIMAL-POKVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.. 117,751, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom fit may concern:
Beit known that I, N rcHoLAs DENNY, of Sarana-c, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Animal-Poke, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyn g drawing forming part of this speciiication, in which the iignre is a side view of my improved poke, partly in section, through the bow and roller.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved poke for horses and other anim als, which shall `be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the poke, as hereinafter more fully .described.
A is the bow, which passes around the animals neck. B is the roller, the journals of which work in sockets or holes in the arms of the bow A in such a position as to leave a suitable space for the animals neck between its upper side and the top or bend of the bow A. O is the tail or bar of the yoke, to the inner end of which is securely attached the plate D, the upper end of which is pivoted to the upper forward part of the roller B, as shown in the figure. .The plate D is curved, as shown in the figure, and is forked or branched to form prongs or prickers d', which pass up in an inclined direction through holes in the roller B in such position that, should the animal press the bar C against a fence or other object, the prongs or prickers cl will be forced out against his neck and thus stop him. E is a spring', one end of which is attached to the roller B and the other 0r free end of which rests against the inner side of the plate D. The spring E should be of such a strength as to support the bar O when raised from the ground and keep its weight from forcing the prongs or prickers d out against the anilnals neck. The roller B is kept from being turned too far by the weight of the bar O, or by pressure against said bar, by the stop F attached to the roller B, and which strikes against the key G that connects the arms of the bow A and holds them in position. The forward side of the roller B should be faced with an iron plate tov prevent wear.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the bow A, roller B, bar O, pivoted, curved, and pronged plate D d', spring E, stop F, and key G, in connection with .each other, said parts being constructed and operating substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
NICHOLAS DENNY.
