RAILWAY-RAIL TIE-PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1916.
Application filed November 26, 1915. Serial No. 63,585.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS VVAsHINo'roN SLAUGHTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baton Rouge, in the State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rail Tie- Plates, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a rail brace, and more particularly to the class of tie plates for railway rails.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a tie plate of this character, wherein all possibility 'of the spreading of the railway rails is eliminated, yet the said rails are free for expansion and contraction.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a rail tie of this character, wherein uniform gage of the track can be had in a convenient manner with despatch.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a rail tie of this character. wherein the construction thereof is novel in form, to prevent lateral displacement of the rails, thereby eliminating any possibility of accidents from this cause.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a rail tie of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable, capable of use with different sizes of flanged rails, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other obiect in view the invention consists in the features of constrnction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing: Figurel, is a fragmentary top plan view of a track, showing the tie plate constructed in accord- .ance with the invention applied to the rails thereof. Fig. 2, is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a fragmentary side elevation.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A, designate the cross ties, B, the rails of the railway track, and C, the tie plate hereinafter fully described.
The tie plate comprises a pair of similarly constructed bed plates 5 and 6, respectively, which are superimposed upon the cross tie A, beneath the rails B, with the base flanges thereof resting upon said plates. Each plate 5, and 6, is formed with an outside angle flange 7, which overlaps the base flange of the rail at the outside of the same, while provided in this plate both at the inside and outside of the said rail are spike receiving 'holes 8, the outside pair of which are cut through the flange 7, and through these holes are driven spikes 9, which secure the rails and plates to the cross ties.
Formed at the inner edge of the plate 5, is a reduced extension 10, terminating in a threaded stem 11, while formed n the inner edge of the plate 6, is a. redugzed extension 12, terminating in a collar or sleeve 13, through which is passed the stem 11, the latter being fitted with an adjustable nut 14, so that the plates can be adjusted for the accurate gage of the track.
It will be apparent that the rails of the track cannot= possibly spread, and at the same time the proper gage of the track can be had with despatch. The rails 13, when mounted in the safety tie plate are free for the usual expansion and contraction. There is no possibility of the rails getting out of gage when properly set.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the safety tie plate will .be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
\Vhat is claimed is:
A device of the class described, comprising a pair of flat rail base plates. each having an upwardly and inwardly bent outer edge forming an angle flange for engagement with the outer side edge of the base of the rail when superimposed upon the bed plates. a reduced extension at the inner edge of each base plate, a stem integral with one extension and havinga bight near its free end to elevate the latter above the plane of opposite sides of the bases of therails, the the major portion of said stem, a perforated angle flanges being perforated coincident ear on the other extension and loosely rewith the openings at the outer sides of the 10 ceiving the elemted end of the stem, and a rails.
5 nnt threaded on said elevated end of the In testimony whereofI aflix my signature. 7
