ASSIGNOBS TO THE BAUER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, INCORPORATED, A
CORPORATION or MARYLAND.
V CAN-OPENER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, LAWRENCE E. BAUER and JOHN WV. BAUER, citizens of the United States, residing at Havre de Grace, in the countv of Harford and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Can-Openers, 'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in can openers, and has for its object to provide a cheap, simple and efficient device for opening the can below the head thereof.
It is the general practice to cut out a portion of the can head, leaving an edge around the opening which forms an obstruction to the contents when being emptied from the can. By our present invention we overcome this objection and dispense with said edge by cutting away the can just below the lower edge of the head, thereby leaving an opening free from any obstruction and coincident with the inner surface of the can.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in'the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 isa top plan view of our invention showing a can in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the circular cutting blade. Fig. 4: is a vertical cross-section of Fig. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views thereof, 1 designates the base to which is bolted an upright 2 the upper end 3'of which extends parallel to and projects over the said base 1. The said upper end is also provided with two integral lugs 4 and 5 projecting from one side thereof each provided with an aperture through which The said shaft 6 is provided with a hand wheel 7 on one end and a gear-wheel 8 on the opposite end, and a coiled spring 9 between the lug 4 and the collar 10 which Specification of Letters Patent.

latter is adjustableon said shaft 6. The coiled spring 9 exerts sufiicient tension against the said collar to prevent the head 11 from dropping down The said head 11 is provided on its lower head 11 to be raised or lowered as desired.
Revolubly mounted on the stem 14 just above the head 11 is an arm 17 to one end of which is pivoted a lever 18 carrying a circular cutter 19 held to the lower surface thereof bythe bolt 20 on which latter it is free to revolve. The said lever 18 is formed with a projection 20 at one side which rests upon the top of the can when the cutting is being done.
The operation of the device is as follows: The head 11 is raised to allow the can 13 to be placed on by turning the hand wheel 7 untilthe ta pgs 'he lever 18 is then drawn toward the can until the cutter 19 is forced through the body of the can just below the head thereof, and bv means of said lever 18 the cutter 19 is drawn around the can cutting the head therefrom. The head 11 is then raised from the can by means of the hand wheel 7 and lifted from the base 1. described our invention what when not in use. surface with a number of tangs 12' which an aperture in the upper the base 1 and then lowered head having a stem pI 0Vidd with a rack In testimony whereof Weafix our signaprojecting through sald upright, a shaft tures in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
