Description

I wlLLlAM HANcoc'K.
Shingle uffnldmg. i
117624 MENTEDAUGUSH W iimeases. Invxennr.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM iHANCOCK, OF GOSPORT, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROOFING-BRACKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,624, dated August 1, 1871.
To all uhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HANCOCK, of Gosport, in the county of Owen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shingle-Scaffolding; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. u
Figure I of the drawing is a representation of a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of my invention.
This invention has relation to an improvement in shinglescaffolding and it consists in the hereinaiter-described novel construction and arrangement of the adjustable bench-beam and supporting-post, for the purpose of rendering the scaffolding more convenient and useful.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, A represents the bed-piece, the upper end of which fits under the last row of shingles, while the lower end is provided with pointed projections a, by means of which it is secured to the roof; B, the toothed shin gle-clamp journaled to the brackets C, and slotted at its lower end to receive the post D pivoted therein, and prevented from falling back by the cross-bar E supported on the standards F. G indicates the inclined bench 4having a longitudinal slot, H, through which pass two transverse thumb-screws, I I', de-
signed to hold the post D which rises between them, being slightly bent forward, as shown, and
provided with the adjusting-teeth or studs J. The bench is adjusted to the inclination of the roof by letting the screw Irest on one or the other of said studs. The upper screw I rests on the bent back part of the post D as a support. K represents a flatheaded thumb-screw fitted to the top of the post D, and designed to act as a stop to the bench when adjusted to a roof very much inclined. The bench may be lifted 0E the post by turning the screw in the proper and obvious direction. The lower end of the slot H is beveled to suit the inclination of the post D and allow the latter a rm support against it. L represents pointed studs in the end of the bench, which are to be driven into the boards of the roof above the shingles and after the end of the bedpiece A has been inserted underneath the last row, as before stated.
In shingling a roof it is intended that two of these scai'olds should be used, similarly adjusted at some distance apart, and boards laid on the benches for the use of the workmen.
'I claim as my invention The post D pivoted to the clamp B, and provided with the studs J and thumb-screw K, in combination with the bench G, thumb-screw I I', and bed-piece A, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the'above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
' WILLIAM HANCOCK.
