WILLIAM MARTIN GREEN, OF GALLATIN, TENNESSEE.

IMPROVEMENT IN RAZOR-STROPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117 ,621, dated August l, 1871.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM MARTIN GREEN, of Gallatin, in the county of Sumner and State of Tennessee, have invented certain Improvements in Razor-Strops, of Which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing.

My invention consists in a novel stock or handle, provided with a hone and anumber of straps varying' in quality, the parts being so arranged that either one of the straps may be instantly stretched on the stock for use.

Figure l is a perspective view of my strop. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through one end of the same.

In constructing my strop I irst provide a Ilat bar or body, A, and on one end of the same secure a block, a, and on the opposite end Inount a similar block, B, which is provided with a tongue iitting into a longitudinal slot, b, made in the bar for the purpose, as shown in Figs. l and 2. I next pror'ide a handle, (l, having a screw-neck on one end, and insert said neck into a longitudinal hole in the end of the stock A an d through the tongue or block B, as shown in Figs. l and 2, so that by turnin g the handle its neck is caused to move the block B on the stock. I next provide a number of straps, D, equal in size, but of different degrees of Ineness, and provide them each at one end with two eyelets, c, and secure their opposite ends by a single screw to the end of the stock A, having the block aI thereon, as

shown in Fig. 1. On the block B I secure two pins, g, as shown in Fig'. l.

When any particular strap is desired for use its free end is turned up, and the eyelets therein slipped onto the pins of block B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and then the handle turned so as to draw back the block and produce the desired tension on the strap D. In this manner the strap is stretched between the blocks a and B so as to offer a rm but elastic surface to the blade being sharpened. The screw-handle affords a convenient means by which to hold and manipulate the strop. When it is desired to use a dierent strap, D, the handle C is turned so as to let the block B slide back, and then the rst strap detached therefrom, another one attached in its place, and the handle turned to tighten it up.

Vhen any or all of the straps become unfit for further use they may be removed from the stock and others substituted in their place. l

On the inside of the stock A I secure a hone, G, which may be conveniently used after turning the straps back out of the way. Being arranged in this manner, the hone is protected from injury when not in use, and also prevented from soiling the clothes or fingers of the person using' the strop.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A razor-strop, having a series of straps attached permanently at one end of the body A, and arranged to be attached separately at their opposite end to the adjustable block B, substantially as described, whereby either strap may be adjusted for use at will, as set forth.
