NOSE-RING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21,1916.
Application filed September 10, 1915. Serial No. 50,041.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALVA J. Dnnnwns'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, in the county of Bates and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nose-Rings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in nose rings and has particular application to a nose ring for hogs.
In carryin out the present invention, 1t is my purpose to provide a ring of the class described which may be readily and securely fastened in the nose of the animal and which will be constructed in such manner as to abrade the nose of the hog in the event of the animal rooting.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a nose ring con structed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through the ring.
My improved ring is formed of a single length of wire 1 triangular in cross section, as shown in Fig. 1, and having one end miter-ed to form a point 2 and the opposite end bent upon itself to form an eye 3. The outer edge of the wire 1 adjacent to the point 2 is formed with a notch 4. In practice, the pointed extremity-2 of the wire is passed through the nose of the animal and the wire then bent upon itself and the pointed extremity slipped through the loop 3. When the ring is applied to the nose and the pointed end 2 passed through the eye 3, the notch l engages the inner portion of the loop 3 with the efiect to prevent the accidental withdrawal of the pointed end of the wire from the eye. When the wire is bent into ring formation one edge of the wire is disposed upon the outer side of the ring so that when the ring is secured in the nose of the animal such edge will abrade the nose when the animal attempts to root.
I am aware of the fact that heretofore it has been proposed to construct nose rings of a single length of wire, but, so far as I am aware, this wire is circular in cross section, in contradistinction to angular and, so far as I know, I am the first to construct a nose ring from a single length of wire of angular cross section. By making the nose ring of wire that is of angular formation in cross section, an abrading action is set up in the nose of the hog in the event of the animal rooting, thereby eliminating the possibility of the hogs excavating.
While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claim and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A nose ring for animals comprising a length of wire triangular in cross section and having one end pointed to pass through the nose of the animal, and the opposite end formed with an eye adapted to receive the pointed extremity when the wire is bent in ring formation, the outer surface of said wire adjacent to the pointed extremity thereof being formed with a notch adapted to engage the adjacent portion of the eye to prevent accidental removal of the ring from the nose.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALVA J. DEERVVESTER.
IVitnesses:
