JOHN MCLUCKIE, 01E LONG POINT, ILLINOIS.
PAPER-PUNCH.
Application filed July 2, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN MGLUGKIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Point, in the county of Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in paper punches of that particular type having a pair of punch members adapted to simultaneously form a pair of spaced openings in a sheet of paper, to properly prepare the paper to be filed upon a filing device having spaced filing pins.
In this class of punching devices, it has been customary to mount the punch pins upon a rigid base plate, between which and a superposed resilient jaw or punch plate the paper is inserted, said resilient jaw or punch plate having openings for the passage of the punch pins, whereby when the movable jaw is operated by means of a cam lever or the like the paper will be punched and the portions of the paper punched out discharged through said openings. Heretofore it has been customary to effect the ejection or discharge of the punched out portions of paper by means of resilient sleeves of rubber inclosing the punch tubes. These sleeves however become inoperative after a comparatively short period, owing either to the disintegration of the rubber or its loss of elasticity.
The object of my invention is to provide a punch of the general character specified which may be of an all metal construction, and in which a novel construction of ejecting spring is employed in place of the rubber sleeves, by means of which an inexpensive and efficient as well as a highly durable type of punch is produced.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper punch embodying my invention, showing in full and dotted lines the normal and working positions of the cam lever. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line of the major axis of the ejecting spring.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the punch as a whole, which comprises a Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 37,728.
rigid base plate 2 provided with upwardly extending supporting posts 3. Arranged in superposed relation to said base plate is a movable jaw or punch plate 4, made of spring metal, and which normally projects upwardly and forwardly at an angle from the base plate, to provide a space 5 for lever is adapted to be moved downwardly and forwardly to bring the cam portions into engagement with the free edge of the jaw or plate l, whereby the latter may be moved downwardly toward the plate 1.
The plate 1 is provided with a pair of spaced punch pins or posts 10 which are rigidly fixed thereto, while the jaw or plate 4t is formed with openings 11 in alinement with said pins and which are adapted to permit of the upward passage of the pins when the jaw is forced down. Extending longitudinally between the pins 10 is a spring metal strip 12 centrally fastened to the plate 2, as by a rivet 13, said strip thence having its end portions extending upwardly and outwardly at an angle toward the sides of the punch and terminating above the punch pins 10, said ends of the strip being provided with openings 14 of a size to permit of the free passage of the pins when the jaw is operated.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that in the use of the device the edge of the sheet of paper to be punched is inserted into the space 5 between the strip 12 and the overlying portion of the aw 4L, and the said jaw is then forced down by means of the cam lever, whereby said jaw will be moved down over the punch pins and will cut out portions of the paper, the ends of the spring strip being forced down to permit of the passage of the pins through the opening 7 in the jaw or plate 4%. The openings being thus punched in the sheet of paper, the operating lever is moved backwardly, whereupon the aw 5 will be automatically retracted by its spring action and the ends of the spring strip 12 will also move upward on the punch pins and force the sheet of paper out of engagement with said pins, and at the same time displace and I discharge the punched out portions of the paper. By the use of a perforated spring strip for this purpose, an all metal punch is provided which is not only simple of con struction but of maximum durability and may be made at a comparatively low cost.
' I claim 1. A paper punch comprising a base plate, a pair of punch pins projecting from the base plate, a resilient punch plate movable toward and from the base plate, said punch plate having openings therein to receive said punch pins, a lever for adjusting the punch plate, and a ribbon spring having a flattened central portion secured to the base plate at a point equi-distantly between the punch pins, said spring having arms extending in opposite directions at an angle from said flattened portion toward the punch pins and terminating in flattened end portions lying parallel with the base plate, said flattened end portions being arranged to overhang Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
and apertured to slidably engage the punch pins.
2. A paper punch comprising a base plate,
a pair of spaced punch pins projecting from the base plate, a resilient punch plate movable toward and from the base plate and above the base plate and having its end portions apertured to slidably engage the punch pins.
