Description

JUL 25 1871 PATENTED v u I @ummm TENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. MORRIS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPIRIT-STILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,445, dated July 25, 1871.
and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this' specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation, and Fig.2 is a horizontal section.
This invention relates to an improvement in 'the ordinary columnar still-cap, composed of a series of cups placed one upon or one beside another, in each of which redistillation takes place of the liquid condensed from the vapor sent up into the cap from the still. The invention consists in the means hereinafter described, whereby a rectification of the spirit is made to take place in each cup of the columnar cap at the same time with the redistillation above referred to.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 shows the columnar cap, consisting ofa series of sepa-rate cups, a,set one upon another, and provided with external flanges b at their tops and bottoms, through which pass the bolts that fasten the cups together. Each cup has a diaphragm, c, extending across its bottom, through which diaphragm are made holes that communicate with the bores of two or more vertical tubes, d., which are secured to the diaphragms at their lower ends. The tubes d are open at top and bottom. Inclosing each of them is a tube, c, closed at its top and secured at its lower end to the diaphragm c. Holes e are made in the outside tubes e, at their bottoms, above the diaphragms. Across each cup, at a suitable distance above the diaphragm c, is placed a perforated plate, j', having a vertical flange, fl, turned down around its edge, which flanges f1 rest on rings f2, secured to the insides of the'cups above the diaphragms. By means of these rings and flanges the plates f are sustained against any degree of pressure from vapor they are likely to be subjected to. Through each diaphragm passes an overflow-tube g, whose upper end is separated by a slight interval from the perforated plate above. The whole space within each cup above the plate f is filled with charcoal or other suitable rectifying material, and each cup should be provided with a man-hole, It, at one side, at top and bottom, to allow of removing and replacing the charcoal as often as it may become necessary.
The operation of the apparatus is .as follows:
The vapor that rises from the still into each cup successively passes upward through the tubes d, is turned downward by the tubes e to the diaphragms c, passes through the holes e', and ascends through each cup to the one neXt above, being thus distributed through the rectifyingmachine. That part of the vapor that is condensed in each cup is volatilized by the heat supplied from beneath, and its vapor passes upward with the rest. The pipe gis for preventing too great an accumulation of liquid in anyone cup by affording the liquid an escape into the cup beneath before it rises high enough to obstruct the perforations in the plates c. Vhat I esteem as new and of my invention herein is the means described for rectifying the spirit at the same time it is redistilled by means of the charcoal in each cup resting on the perforated plate which sustains the charcoal, the said plate allowing the vapor to ascend into the charcoal and become partially rectified by passing through it, so that the spirit is rendered purer and purer at each successive stage of its ascent, and may be rendered entirely pure by carrying the process far enough.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in each cup a of the columnar still-cap, of the doubling tubes d e, overflow-tube g, the perforated plate j', and a quantity of charcoal or other suitable material placed above it, as specified.
