IMPROVEMENT IN BEDSTEADS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAWRENCE J. J oHNsoN, of the city of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented an Adjustable Bedstead and Folding Spring-Bottom combined 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact tion of the same when slid and folded together.

Fig. 4 represents the hinges when drawn down by the cords.

The nature of my invention con sists in the combination of the extensionbedstead and springbottom mattress, operating with hinges, cords, pulleys, and side lever for raising the one-half oi the spring-bottom, that is jointed at the center, so that it can be folded together and adjusted with the bedstead to half its length and save room in an office or other apartment.

A represents the extension bedstead with its side boards B sliding into the opposite side boards C so as to reduce the bedstead one-half of its size. The spring-bottom D is jointed in its center so as to correspond with the size of the bedstead wh en extended, and to be folded together when the bedstead is slid together. The spring-bottom D rests upon the side rails E that are attached to the inside ofthe lower side of the side boards C,form ing the guide and groove into which the side boards B are slid. Across the bottom of the side boards C is a cross-brace, G, to which two center feet, H H, are attached, and two small pulleys, J J. Two other small pulleys, K K, are attached to a cross-strip or piece, L, in the lower side of the spring-bottom D. On the upper side of this cross-strip L are two hinges, M M, pivoted to the strip, so as to operate up and down and sidewise. On the outer side of eaeh hinge M is a spiral spring, N,attaehed to the hinge near its joint and to the cross-strip L to facilitate the.

A jointed horizontal lever, P, extendingthrough the side of the side board C and rail E, and operating on the cords R R that pass over the pulleys J K, is attached to the center of the hingesAM to draw down the hinges. By drawing out the lever P the hinges M are drawn down toward each other to be out ofthe way when` the spring-bottom D is opened its full length.

What I claim as my invention, and vdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The arrangement of the extension and adjust. able bedstead A with its lever F, hinges M, pulleys J and K, cords R R, and spring-bottom D, when combined as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
