ARTHUR HORANCE, OF NORTH BAY, ONTARIO, CANADA.
'CONVERTIBLE soFA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentedv Feb. 29,1916.
Application 'led December 31, 1913. Serial No. 809,708.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR I-IoRANoE, a citizen of Canada, residing at North Bay, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Sofas, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sofas and more particularly to convertible sofas.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a multiple sofa which may be converted into a lounge or bed by elevating the arms.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a novel arm rest which is attached to the seat in such manner that it may be folded out of the way so that the seat may be used for a lounge.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section with parts broken away. Fig. 4 is a view of the bracket 9 shown detached from the cooperating structure.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the lounge is constructed of a suitable framework 1 which is supported upon legs 2 and is provided with a seat 3 and a back frame 4, both of which are cushioned in any suitable manner, as will be readily understood.
The back frame 4 is provided with divi- I sion pieces 5 which in effect divide the sofa into three seating compartments, as shown, the division pieces being cushioned, as shown at 6, and are curved upon their front edges,
as indicated in Fig. 2, having a head proj ection 7 and a body projection 8. Secured to each division piece is a bracket 9 which Copies ofY this patent may be obtained for straddles the same and is bifurcated at its outer end, as shown at 10, to receive the pivoting knuckle 11 of the arm l2. The arm l2 is connected to the bracket by a pivot bolt 13 and is provided at its outer end with a cross piece 14 upon which is supported the arm rest 15 cushioned in any suitable manner. bracket, as shown, is provided with a shoulder 16 and the arm 12 is provided with a projecting finger 17 so disposed that when the arm is in a horizontal position, it will engage the shoulder 16 limiting the downward movement of the arm;
In order that the arm 12 may be retained against accidental displacement when in raised position, as shown in dotted lines in` Fig. 2, I provide a spring pressed plunger 18 arranged in the head of the bracket 9 and adapted to bear against the knuckle 11. This frictional engagement of the plunger will act to retain the arm in any position of adjustment but is designed only to prevent accidental dropping of the arm when elevated.
vWhat is claimed is In combination, a sofa seat, a back frame, division pieces rectangular in cross section secured in a vertical position upon said frame, brackets straddling and secured to said division pieces and each being formed with a slot, an arm rest for each bracket having a knuckle pivotally arranged within the arm slot so as to have vertical swinging adjustment, and a spring pressed plunger housed within each bracket and adapted to bear against the surface of the knuckle to hold the arm in various adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- ARTHUR I-IORANCE.
