Description

F. CHRIST.
GATE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 6.1915- 1,173,929. Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
FRANK CHRIST, OF TUB-KEY RIVER, IOWA, ASSIGNOR F ONE-THIRD TO I W. CHRIST AND ONE-THIRD TO L. J'. CHRIST, BOTH OF TURKEY RIVER, IOWA.
GATE.
To all whom itmay concern: Be it known that I, FRANK CHRIsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Turkey River, in the county of Clayton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and. I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to whlch 1t appertains to make and use the same. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates and more particularly to swinging gates, and the primary ob ect of the invention 'is'to provide an improved gate of this character which may be quickly and" easily raised and lowered to permit the same to be swung over snow or other obstacles, or to permit the passage of small stock, thereby facilitating the separation of the same from the large stock. v
A further object of the invention 1s to provide a device of this character which will be tion; Fig. 2 is the same kind of view of thegate in raised position; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
In describing my invention I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which the numeral 1 designates a vertlcal support having secured thereto and spaced therefrom by securing members 2, a parallel hinge bar 3 1 having a cap -11: on its upper end. A substantially rectangular gate 5 made of any desired material with horizontally disposed Tails 6 is hinged to the said bar 3 by hinges 7 secured at its top and bottom. The hinge bar 3 has secured near its upper end intermediate the hinges 7 a gate supporting hook 8 for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully set forth. On one side of the rear upright of the gate is fixedly secured a bracket 9 having an outwardly extending body portion. Se-

cured within the body portion of the said bracket and between the same and the rear upright portion of the gate are a air of pulleys 10 mounted therein in vertica alinement with one another.
An adjusting lever ll'is fulcrumed at one end 12 to the rear upright portion of the sald gate intermediate the two pulleys mounted thereon. The opposite end of the said lever 11 has formed thereon a hook 13 adapted'to engage one of the horizontally extending rails 6 of the gate. Secured at one end intermediate the ends of the said lever is acable 14 which is positioned over the upper pulley and under the lower pulley, and has its opposite end secured to the gate supporting hook 8 on the hinge bar 3.
At the forward end of the gate are mounted slidable latch members 15 on verticallydisposed guides 16, on the forward upright portion of the gate.
In operation when the different parts of the gate are assembled as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the cable 14: which is secured to the adjusting lever 11 is brought upwardly and rearwardly over the upper pulley 10 on the rear upright of the gate, and then down under the lower pulley, and up to the gate supporting hook, to which it is secured. This gate supporting hook is rigidly secured to the hinge bar 3, and owing to the fact thatthe hinges of the gate are adapted to slide on the said hinge bar, when the lever 11 is moved either upwardly or downwardly and its hooked end engaged with one of the rails 6 of the gate, the gate will through the action of the cable secured to the lever, be raised or lowered and held as desired.
It is obvious that by this simplev and yet eflicient arrangement of parts I have provided a gate of this character which may be very simply and readily raised or lowered to any desired position, along the hinge bar 3 when desired. The foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, and the manner of applying the same to use will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention.
While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the 110 minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing'from thespirit or sacrificing any of the features of the in vention. V
I claim as my invention: j The combination with a hinge bar suitably mounted parallel to a verticalsupport, of a substantially rectangular gate with horizontally extending rails connected by vertical uprights at either end having its rear upright adjustably hinged at the top and bottom to said bar, an adjusting lever fulcrumed at one end intermediate the endsof said rear upright and extending forwardly from the same, a bracket having an outwardly extending body portion with laterally projecting feet secured to the same side of the rear upright to which the adjusting lever is-fulcrumed, a pair of pulleys mounted between the body portion of the bracket and said upright in Vertical alinement, a
gate supporting hook mountedon the hinge ver adjacent the fulcrumed end of the same, a
bar and spaced a short distance below the I and a hook arranged on the forward end of V said lever adapted to engage one of the horizontallyextending rails on said gate whereby upon movement of the leverrto different rails, the gate isvertically adjustable to Va; rious positions.
' In testimony whereof I have hereuntoset my hand in presence of two subscribing-wit- V nesses. 7 I
. FRANK CHRIST.
