NEST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 16, 1917.
Application filed March 10, 1916. Serial No. 83,364.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SHAr'ro, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Nests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hens nests and more particularly to the class of hens nests which are adapted to be mounted between two hen runs or pens and in an opening provided for them.
A further object provision of a hens nest that will provide means whereby the hen may be disposed within the nest in a manner that will prevent its returning to the hen yard from which it came and will close the opening through which the hen entered the nest and open the exit from the nest so that the hen will be obliged to enter the adjoining hen ard.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hens nest that will be automatic in its operation and simple in construction, durable and efficient in use and inexpensive to manufacture.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete hens nest; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough.
It is well known in the science of chicken raising that in the separating season, in other words, when it is desired to separate the hens that are laying from the flock, it is a difiicult matter to determine just which hens are laying and which are not. This invention, therefore, contemplates a structure that will automatically close the inlet to the next hen yard in the dividing fence, on which is mounted my improved device.
A frame 1 consists of upright posts 2 joined together at their upper ends and the cross members 3 which are secured to the uprights 2. The longitudinally extending bar A is attached to the members 3 and is adapted to limit the downward movement of the nest box 5.
Mounted upon the uprights 2 are the side walls 6 of the nest shelter which has a roof 7, one-half of which is hinged as at 8, so
. that it may be lifted for easy access to the nest 5. One of the uprights 2 at each side of the shelter and on its inner face, has pivoted thereto, the arms 9. The pivot pin of the invention is the 10 of the arms 9 is extended through the arm at a considerable distance away from the center point of the arm so that a short and a' long arm are provided, on the ends of which are pivoted the swinging doors l1 and 12.
The nest 5 has ears 13 mounted on each side of its center and eye bolts 14 are provided in the ears and adapted to extend through apertures formed in the long end of the arms 9, this aperture being in the center of the arm 9.
Assuming the nest is to be mounted in the dividing fence between two hen yards, the hen will enter the nest through the opening indicated by the arrow and the weight of the hen will cause each of the arms 9 to swing upon their pivots 10, whereupon the door 12 will be elevated to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing and the door 11 will descend. It will now be necessary for the hen to leave through the opening in the opposite end of the nest from which it entered. The weight of the hen then being off the nest, the arm 9 will be free to swing back to its normal position and the device made ready for the entrance of the neXt hen. The arms 9 are connected at their ends by arms 9' which are adapted to strike the end walls of the nest for limiting the downward movement of the doors 11 and 12.
From the foregoing, it will be observedthat a very simple and durable hens nest has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood, however, that slight changes or modifications in the minor details of con-. struction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
What is claimed is 2 1. An automatic nest comprising a shelter, a frame supporting said shelter, a swinging frame pivotally mounted on said shelter supporting frame, a nest box disposed beneath said shelter and suspended from said swinging frame, said swinging frame being provided with transversely extending arms adapted to contact with the end edges of said nest box, closures carried by said swinging frame at the ends thereof and disposed directly beneath said arms.
2. An automatic nest comprising a frame supporting said shelter, a swinging frame pivotally mounted on said shelter a shelter,
supporting frame, a nest box disposed beneath said shelter and suspended from said swinging frame, said swinging frame being provided with transversely extending arms adapted to contact with the end edges of said nest box, closures carried by said swing- I ing frame at the ends thereof and disposed ranged at each end of said shelter, a swinging frame pivotallv mounted on said posts and consisting of longitudinally arranged arms, connecting arm's extending transversely across said shelter and connecting said longitudinal arms, closures suspended Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0.
from said connecting arms, a nest box suspended from said longitudinal arms, and a stop bar for limiting the downward movement of said nest box, said connecting arms adapted to contact with the edges of said nest box when said nest is operated.
4;. An automatic nest comprising a frame, side walls carried by said frame, a nest box disposed between said side walls, a swinging frame pivotally mounted upon said stationary frame, connecting elements carried by the side edges of said nest box, and connected with said swinging frame at a point at one side of the pivotal connection of said swinging frame with said stationary frame, said swinging frame being provided with transversely extending bars of a substantial width adapted to contact intermittently with -5 the end edges of said nest box, and closures swingingly mounted on said swinging frame directly beneath said bars.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
