' IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE COVERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,358, dated July 25, 1871.

To all whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANcis R. WOLEINGER,

of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine Covers 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and letters marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sewing-machine cover made according to my improved plan; Fig. 2, an elevation of the same, as when it is closed; Fig. 3, a vertical section taken through the open cover at Fig. 1.

The object of the present invention is to improve the sewing-machine tablepatented by John J. Wheat, October 4, 1870, and numbered 108,- 074; and its nature consists in thc peculiar construction and arrangement of the hinges for attaching the front of the cover, in combination with the other parts forming the cover, whereby the necessity for making the said front in two parts is obviated, while, at the same time, the cover presents a much neater appearance, and is much more substantial, inasmuch as there are fewer joints in the face of the cover, as the whole is hereinafter fully shown and described.

A represents the table (proper) of a sewingmachine; D D, the ends of the cover; C, the

back; I, the front; and E the top of the cover.

G represents what is known in said patent as the sinking-piece, which is hinged to back C at P, and rises up in the place of C when the cover is closed, as shown at Fig. 2. The back C is hinged at b toA, and at a to top E, the ends D being also hinged at c to the top E. All of this arrangement is substantiallythe same as in Wheats patent referred to, nothing thus far being claimed as new. But the front I of the cover is arranged differently, inasmuch as it is provided with a rectangular-winged hinge, d f, the lower part f of which fastens to the top E, and the straight part or wing d to the said front I, the eye or joint of the hinge coming even with the tops of the endpieces D, so that the front I will fold flat onto them, as shown by dotted lines' J, Fig. 3. By this means the necessity for making a joint at or on the line x w, as is the case in the aforesaid patent, is obviated, adding very materially to the appearance of the cover, andrendering it much more durable, while, at the same time, the strain on the hinge d fis not nearly so great as when the front is made in two parts and hinged in the ordinary way. Hence the cover always shuts closely together and the front does not knuckle.

l Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates, is

The solid front I, combined with the hinges d f, when the wings j' are secured to the top E and are provided with joints or eyes coming even with the tops of the ends D D, when folded so that the said front I will fold flat on the said ends, as described.
