Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HOWARD E. VAN ORDEN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at East Orange, in the county lof kEssex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Doors, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sliding doors and particularly to combination doors of this class involving both swinging and sliding doors such as are usually employed in connection with elevators or elevator shafts, and which involve a swinging door member and one or more sliding door members which are adapted to be moved into a plane or planes adjacent to and parallel. with the swinging door member, in which position all of said door members may be swung into an open position so as to fully open the door space whenever desired in order to permit large articles of any kind or class to be passed into and removed from the elevator; and the object of this invention is to provide improved means for manipulating or operating the sliding door member or members.
In the accompanying drawing V l have shown my improvement applied to a door having but one sliding member, and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is an inside view of part of an elevator frame and showing the sliding door member in an open position; Fig. 2 a partial section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing the hinged door member in a fully open position and showing the sliding door member in an open partially swung position and indicating the same in dotted lines in the fully swung position; Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. Q'and showing the parts in a dierent position from that shown in Fig. 3; and, Fig. 5 a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, Figs. 3, 4 and 5 being on an enlarged scale.
In the drawing forming part of this speciication, I have shown at a the right hand top portion of an elevator door frame and comprising a horizontal top member a2, and a vertical side member a3. The top frame member a2 is provided with the usual hanger slide bar t, and at c l have shown the swinging door member which is hinged to the frame member a3 in the usual manner at c2, and at d, I have shown the sliding door member with the top of which is connected the hanger plate c one end of which is pivoted to the sliding door member el at c2. The hanger slide bar o is provided with the usual hanger blocks f which are adjustable longitudinally thereon and with which are connected hanger bolts f2 which are threaded and provided with top and bottom nuts f3 and f4 and the hanger plate e is secured to the blocks j by means of the bolts f2, and all this construction is old and well known and forms no part oit my invention.
In the practice of my invention, I secure on the free end portion of the hanger plate c an attaching block g, this connection being made by means of-bolts g2, and said attaching block is slotted longitudinally as shown at g3, and pivoted in the inner end portion of the slot in said block and centrally thereof is a Vlock pawl The head h2 of the pawl h is provided with side trunnions h3 and a cap plate g4 is secured to the block g, and in connection with said block forms bearings for the trunnions h3, and said trunnionsl h3 vare also provided with angular extensions it* adapted to receive a key z' indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5, and by means of which the lock pawl 71, may be operated as hereinafter described.
The head 72.2 of the lock pawl z, is approximately circular in form and provided in its back faceV with socket recesses h5 and h6, and secured to the attaching block g or the top plate g* thereof at y' is a spring 7s provided with a lock pin k2, and said spring and pin are adapted to lock the pawl is, in the operative position shown in Fig. 3 and also in the inoperative position shown in Fig. 4. The pawl h` is also provided at its tree end with an angular nose piece 7b" and the hanger plate e is provided with a longitudinal slot c3 through which said pawl operates, and the sliding door member Z is provided in the top thereof and under the free end portion oi the plate e with an angular recess d2 in which is located an angular nose m adapted to receive the pawl h as shown in Fig. l, and by means of this construction the hanger plate e is locked to not shown and,described,lbut Which are of( the door member d under ordinary condi-V tions, and said door member is free to slide `so as to open and close a part of the door space in the usual manner.
Under ordinary circumstances and When the door member c is in the closed position, the door member Z may be slid backv and forth so as to admit of ingress and egress to and from the elevator, and in this position of said door members the hinged door c is the lock pin 7a2 fromthe socket recess h5 in the head of the pawl tand the Vkey is applied to said paivl, as indicated in dotted lines inFig. 5, and ythe paivl is turned into.
