COMBINATION-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 28, 1915. Serial No. 58,358.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EM L Gonmceo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following isaspecification.
This invention relates to combination locks, and has for its object toprovide a lock of such type, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efiicient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several vieWs:Fig ure 1 is an elevation of a combination lock in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation with the back plate of the lock casing removed. Fig. 3 is a front elevation with the shiftable disks or tumblers and their operating shaft removed. Fig. 4 is'a vertical sectional view. Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 illustrate the locking disks. Fig. 9 illustrates one of the spacing washers.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a casing forming a chamber 2 and which is closed at its rear by a removableplate 3. The front wall 4 of the casing 1 is countersunk as at 5 and further provided with an openingras at 6. Formed integral with the inner face of the front wall 4 is an annular member 7 having a disk 8 formed integral therewith and said member 7, in connection with the disk 8 forms a pocket 9 for a series of shiftable locking disks or tumblers 10, 11, 12 and 13 and. a series of spacing washers 14 which are interposed between the disks 11 to 13. The disk 8 is formed with a centrally disposed opening 15 and radially disposed notch 16, the latter terminates at a notch 17 formed in the member 7. The inner face of the member 7 is formed with a pair of grooves 18 which are arranged opposite each other and which are adapted to receive offsets 19, 20, formed on the washers 14, whereby these latter are prevented from turning. Each of the washer s 14 has a centrally disposed opening 21 with which communicates a radially extending slot 22.
The locking disk 10 has an opening 23 and a lug 24 and projecting into said openng 23 and communicating with said opening 23 is a radially disposed slot 25. The disk 11 has anopening 26, with the edge thereof formed with an inclination as at 27, 28, and the said inclined portions of the edge of the opening 26 extend in opposite directions with respect to each other and merge into a curved portion 29. The disk 12 has an irregular shaped opening, one portion of which is segmental, as at 30, and the other portion semi-cylindrical as at 31 and the latter is disposed centrally with respect to the former and opens thereinto. The disk 13 has an opening 32 which merges into a cut-away portion 33 and communicating with said cut-away portion 33 and opening 32 is a radially disposed slot 34. The disk 12 has a slot 35 which communicates with the segment-shaped portion of the opening in said disk 12.
When the lock is set so as to arrest the shackle, to be presently referred to, the slots 25, and 34 of the disks 10, 12 and 13 and the radially disposed slot 36 of the disk 11- register with each other and also register with the slot 22 of the washers 14.
The casing 1 has one end only provided with a pair of openings 37, 38. Through the latter is adapted to extend the short arm 39 of a shackle 40. In the former extends an elongated arm 41 of the shackle 40. The arm 41 has a head 42 and mounted there against is a locking arm 43, having a protuberance 44, which when the locking disks are shifted so the slots therein will register it can extend up in said registering slots,
as well as the slots 16, 17, and permit of the shackle being shifted to released position.
The arm 41 of the shackle carries a pin 45 and interposed therebetween and the end wall 46 of the casing 1, as well as surround ing the arm 41, is a coil spring 47 which has a tendency to maintain the locking arm 43 against the wall 48 of the casing 1.
Arranged within the casing 1 are lugs 49, 50, for the arm 41 of the shackle 40 and said arm 41 has a pin 51, which when the shackle Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
is in locked position,'extends between the I lugs 49 and 50 and arrests shifting of the reduced end 53 is upset, as at 54, so that the shaft 52 will be connected to the disk 8 and cannot be pulled from the casing, although the securing of the shaft 52, will be such as not to prevent the rotating of the shaft when required. The shaft 52 has a series of spaced lugs 55, 56, 57 and 58. The lug 55 associates with the lug 24 for the purpose offturning the disk 10. The lug 56 associates with the inclined portions 27, 28 of the disk 11 for the purpose of turning it. The lug 57 associates with the inclined portions 59, 60 of the disk 12 for the purpose of turning it and the lug 58 associates with the inclined portion 60 of the disk 13 for the purpose of turning it. When the washers 14 are mounted in position they are arranged between the lugs 55 to 58. The shaft 52 is formed integral with the disk 61 and provided with a series of graduations 62 and said disk 61 has a finger piece 63 to facilitate the turning of the disk 61 and which will cause the rotating of the shaft 52.
The disks 10 to 13 are positioned in such a manner that they are independently shifted to bring the slots of the disk to register so that the protuberance 44 can be moved up in said slots to enable the release of the shackle 40. The manner of setting up of the combination in question is as follows: The shaft 52 is turned to the right until 30 registers with the arrow upon Fig. 1. It
is then turned to the left until 20 registers with the arrow. Then it is turned to the right until 3 alines with the arrow and then to the left until 12 alines with the arrow.
-The disks are then in such position that ing having means to provide a pocket, an operating shaft rotatably mounted in said pocket and carrying a disk provided with into graduations, washers mounted upon said shaft and arranged within said pocket, means to prevent rotative movement of said washers, locking ,disks interposed between said washers and surrounding said shaft and each having means capable of being engaged with the shaft for shifting the disks,
said means of said locking disks being differently positioned with respect to each other, said locking disks, washers and means to provide a pocket being slotted, a shackle extending into said casing and provided with a locking arm having a protuberance and capable of being shifted in said slots when alined to permit of the release of the shackle.
2. A combination lock comprising a casing, a series of slotted locking disks arranged therein and having means capable of being engaged by an operating shaft for shifting said disks to bring the slots thereof to register, the means of said disks being arranged at different points with respect to each other, an operating shaft having means engaging with said disks for shifting them to bring the slots of the disks to register, a spring controlled shackle extending into said casing and provided with a locking arm positioned within the casing and having a protuberance capable of entering said registering slots to permit of the release of the shackle, and a guide for the shackle.
3. A combination lock comprising a casing, a series of slotted locking disks arranged therein and having means capable of being engaged. by an operating shaft for shifting said disks to bring the slots thereof to register, the means of said disks being arranged at different points with respect to each other, an operating shaft having means engaging with said disks for shifting them to bring the slots of the disks to register, a spring controlled shackle extending into said casing and provided with, a locking arm positioned Within the casing and having a protuberance capable of entering said registering slots to permit of the release of the shackle, and a guide for the shackle, and a series of slotted washers interposed between said disks and having Witnesses:
