, 2 Claims. (Cl. 70-211) Thisinven tion relates to handle and lock assemblies in general and more particularly. to a new and novel handle locking device.
Handle and lock assemblies which are separately moun ed within a closure member are difficult to install, have interoooperative parts diificult to orient during installation, and have other disadvantages.- Combination handle and lock assemblies are prea'ssembled as a single unit. However, many of these combination handle and lock assemblies include a number of different parts and are ditficult to preassemble. This increases the costsof such units and makes their use less desirable.
It. is the object of this invention to teach a lock and handle assembly wherein a commonly" known type of lock may be used and in which relatively simple handle locking mechanism is used. The handle locking mechanism includes a minimum number of separate parts each of which is simple in construction and can be readily in.- stalled within a suitable housing. The lock and handle assembly is compactly mounted within a unitary housing formed to receive the lock member and handle separately, but providing for their cooperative interengagement by means disposed within the back of the housing. 7
The handle locking device hereinafter disclosed and described is relatively inexpensive to manufacture in view of the simplicity of its parts and the ease with which they may be preassernbled for use. The whole handle locking mechanism is mounted within a housing readily received and secured to the face of the closure member with which it is to be used. The handle locking mechanism is readily accessible through the back side of the housing member. However, the housing member can only be disengaged from the face of the closure member by access to the other side of such closure member.
The aforementioned objects, purposes, and advantages in practicing this invention will be more apparent in the illustrations and description of a working embodiment thereof which follows:

FIG. 3 is a left side view of the handle locking device having the part designated by line III--II-I in FIG. 1 broken away and shown in cross section, as seen in the plane of such line, looking in the direction of the arrows thereon.
Referring to the drawing in further detail, there is shown a handle locking device 10 which includes an oblong housing member 12 having a base portion 14 provided near the back thereof and a projecting portion 16 extended on the front side thereof. The base portion 14 and projecting portion 16 are formed integrally. Screw or bolt receiving accesses 18 are formed through the ends of the base portion 14 for attaching the handle locking device 10 to a closure member.
A cylindrical access 20 is formed through the projecting portion 16 of the housing member 12 near one end thereof. A lock tumbler 22 is received within the access 20. The lock tumbler includes a cylindrical body portion 24 and a shoulder portion 26. The tumbler 22 is Patented July 4, 1961 held within access 20 by the engagement of the shoulder 26 withthe end face 28 of access 20 and by a spring loaded detent 30 engaged with the other end face 32 of the access 20. The lock tumbler includes a plurality of tumblers 34 exposed through the side face thereof and which are normally engaged within a recess 36 formed Within the side of access 20. The tumblers 34 are withdrawn from recess 36 when the correct key 38 is received within the lock tumbler. When the tumblers 34 are withdrawn from recess 36 the tumbler may be rotated within the access 20.
Another cylindrical access 40 is provided through the projecting portion. 16 of the housing 12 near the: other end thereof. The shank 42 of a handle member 44 is received within access 40. The tapered end 46 of a latch actuating lever 48 is received through the other side of access 40 into force fitting engagement within the handle shank 42. V t
The lock and handle structures thus far described will benoted tobe simple to manufacture and to assemble withinthe housing member 12. The means provided for cooperatively inner engaging the lock and handle members together, as hereinafter described, will be seento be equally as simple in construction and as readily assembled within the housing member.
A shallow recess 50 is formed within the back face of the housing 12, or more particularly, within the base portion 14 of the housing 12. The shallow recess 50 is in open unobstructed communication with the ends of the tumbler access 20 and the handle receiving shank recess 40. The locking tumbler 22 includes an eccentric finger 52 provided on the extreme end of the cylindrical body portion 24 thereof. The eccentric finger 52 is received within the shallow recess 50 near one end thereof. The latch lever 48, which is engaged to the handle member 44,
includes a locking disc 54 received in engagement therewith and disposed within the other end of the shallow recess 50. The locking disc 54 is held against inadvertent axial movement on the latch lever 48 by a pin 56. The locking disc includes an elongated slot 58 for receiving the latch lever 48 therethrough and is thus rotatable by the latch lever 48 as actuated by the handle member 4 4.
A pivotal hub or projection 60 is provided on the back face of the housing portion 16 within the shallow recess 50. Pivotally mounted upon this hub or projection 60 is a locking lever 62. The locking lever 62 is formed to have one end 64 disposed for engagement by the cocentric finger 52 of the lock tumbler 22. The other end 66 of the latch lever 62 is disposed for engagement within a shouldered cutout 68 provided in the locking disc 54.
The locking lever 62 is biased for engagement with the eccentric finger 52 of the lock tumbler 22, and for interlocking engagement with the locking disc 54, by a leaf spring member 70 which is mounted within the shallow recess 50. The spring member 70 is received between the side wall of the shallow recess 50 and a spring locating projection 72 provided within the shallow recess 50 near such side wall.
The locking disc 54 includes a peripheral cutout 74 for defining the limits of rotational movement permitted the locking disc. A stop 76 is provided within recess 50 and is received within the cutout 74 of disc 54. When shoulder 78 of cutout 74 abuts the stop 76, the shouldered cutout 68 is disposed to receive the end 66 of locking lever 62. Accordingly the locking disc 54 is held against either clockwise or counterclockwise rotation (as viewed in FIG. 1).
The recess 52 is closed by a closure plate 80 which is received upon a ridge 82 provided around the inner defined limits of access 50. The closure plate is secured in place by a threaded fastener 84 received within the o Q pivot hub 60. The closure plate will be noted to retain the locking lever 62 and the spring member 70 so that no other securing means are required.
Operation With the parts of the disclosed handle locking device assembled as'has been described, the device is secured to aclosure member by fastener means received through the end accesses 18 in the base plate 14. The engage ment of a handle or other member, on the end of the latch lever 48 which is not shown, serves to hold the assembly against unintended removal from the closure member.

This enables the tumbler to be rotated by the key 38. Rotation of the tumbler causes the eccentric finger 52 to move the end 64 of the latch lever 62 against the biasing action of the leaf spring 70. The latch lever 62 is moved from the dotted line position shown in FIG. 1 to the full line position. Such movement causes the end 66 of the latch lever to move out of the shouldered cutout 68 in the locking disc 54. The locking disc 54 may then be rotated by the handle 44 through the limits permitted by the peripheral cutout 74 provided in the locking disc.
The locking disc 54 is returned to the position shown in dotted lines by FIG. 1 by the latch mechanism of the closure member (not shown). When the key 38 has been released so that the actuating pressure on the latch lever 62 is withdrawn, the spring member 70 moves the latch lever back into its interlocking position with the locking disc 54. The return movement of the locking lever 62 also causes the eccentric finger to be moved to its original position. This in turn aligns the tumblers 34 with the receiving access 36 in the side wall of the tumbler access 20. When the tumblers 34 are reengaged within the access 36 the tumbler cannot be rotated again without the key 38.
While a preferred embodiment of this invention has been described it will be understood that other modifications and improvements may be made thereto. Such of these modifications and improvements as incorporate the principles of this invention are to be considered as included in the hereinafter appended claims unless these claims by their language expressly state otherwise.

1. A lock and handle assembly, comprising; a unitary housing having a tumbler recess and a handle receiving recess formed separately therethrough, a shallow recess metrical locking lever in interlocking engagement with said locking disc, said eccentric operator finger being operable to pivot said symmetrical lever and release said locking disc to allow rotation of said handle, said leaf spring automatically moving said symmetrical locking lever upon release of said handle to lock said locking disc, and a closure plate received over said shallow recess for closing said tumbler recess.
2. A lock and handle in combination comprising: a key operated rotatable lock barrel having an eccentric actuator on one end and normally rotated to key receiving and removal position; a rotatable handle shank spaced radially from said barrel; a locking shoulder on said shank; asingle lever having a pair of oppositely di rected fingers and means between said fingers mounting said lever for rocking movement; one of said fingers having a curved cam surface riding against said actuator; means biasing said lever to cause said cam surface to ride against said actuator and the other of said fingers to engage said'locking shoulder; the curvature of said cam surface being such that said biasing means automatically rocks said lever to spindle locking position and rotates said barrel to key removal position upon release of said barrel.
