Description
B. K- FORD..
SHELLAC PACKAGE. 2 v APPLICATION FILED SEPT. I4, 19m.
Patented F 11). 29', 1916.
UNITED STATES PATENT ornron.
BEN K. FORD, 0F OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMIPANY, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SHELLAC-PACKAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, BEN K. Form, a citizen of the United States, residing in Oak Park,
in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented a new and useful "Improvement in Shellac-Packages, of which the vboth sides thereof. The coating 8 of copper following is a specification.
My invention relates to sh of liquid orange used to market liquids is composed. bftin, or
more accurately a very thinsheet of-iron covered on both sides with tin- ."Qonsiden able annoyance and loss has resulted from the use of vessels of thissort forltm packaging of liquid orange shellacjiandcertain other liquids which have been'fo-und to affected by contact with the tin coating for prolonged periods Where liquidorange shellac is package in tin containers it has been found to lose his attractive orange color and to turn a dirty, muddy brown if left inthe container for the time necessary to place it in the hands of the ultimate consumer.
.It is the principal object'of this invention to provide a shellacand equivalent package for the packaging and marketing of liquid orange-shellac and; the likeinwhich the contents may be left for an indefinite period Referring to the drawing-Figure 1 is a side elevatlon of a; container orvessel em bodymg my invention; Fig; 2 1s a vertical sectional View taken'substantially on the axis of the container shown ii-Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlargedpartialsectional View taken substantially on uie 1ine3+s of zFig. 1.
The container shown on the drawing is of a usual and well known type and consists of side walls i, a bottom. 5, a frusto-conical top 6 and a suitable cork or, closure 7. The inner llac packages, providing for the packaging andflshipping shellac and similar sub- L stances.'"=" 1 V Thec ordinary sheet metal vessel-1hr] can surface of the bottom, side walls and frustoconical portions, are coated with a layer of copper 8 (Fig.3). In the present instance the bottom,--"""s'ide walls and frusto-oonical "portions each consist of a central iron sheet 9 'and'a coating 10 of tin on the outer or on may be applied directly to the iron sheet 9 or to the inner c'oating of tin.
I have found that copper has no appre ciable effect upon the qualities and properties of liquid orange shellac and similar substances, and it will be manifest therefore Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
ish color given the shellac when packaged in I contact with tin. The copper coating may be applied either while the sheet metal is in uncut condition, while it is in'the form of blanks or after the container has been formed. .-An effectivev way of producing this internal copper surface is to provide the copper in the form of a thin sheet or foil and to roll it with the body of the sheet-to be used to form the container between heat-.
ed metallic rolls so that the'copper sheet or foil is substantially sweated or soldered to either a surface of the iron sheet or to oneof the sheets of tin covering one of the surfaces of the iron sheet. It will be obvious also that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof. I i
I claim:
A commercial package comprising liquid orange shellac or the like 'inclosed in a sheet metal vessel provided with a copper surface where the shellac comes in contact with the vessel. I
