To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FELIX EBERHART, a citizen of the United States, residin in Newark, in the county of Essex and tate of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lap-Seam Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to lap seam metal cans .and has for its object broadly the elimination or hiding of the raw edge within the can which is usually provided in such construction.
important object of the invention is the provision of a lap seam can formed of previously coated material, so constructed that no uncoated edge or surface is present within the can.
In the packaging of shrimp and other similar products it is the custom to provide the can body that the contents cannot corrode the metal. This coating is usually and preferably applied to the sheet from which the-can blanks are cut. Prior to my invention considerable diificulty has been experienced because of the failure, where the material of the can has been coated before the can is constructed, to provide means for preventing corrosion of the raw edge formed in cutting the can blank which forms the inner of the two over-lapping edges in the-lap seam. If this edge, narrow as it is, be left unprotected a black streak is produced on the contents of the can. lhis evil my invention aims to eliminate, through the provision of a lap-seam can of previously coated material which presents no uncoated metal within the. can.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considers; in connection with the ac companying wing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown it embodied in a cylindrical can 4 of the lap seam type. In this form of can the two side edges 5 and 6 of the sheet forming the body are merely overlapped and soldered together, In accordance with 'a more or less common custom of coating these sheets before the body is formed and even before the blanks are cut, the can shown on the drawing is provided with an internal coating 7 of enamel or other protective material. The inner edge 6 of the side seam is cut out at itsends and is bent outwardly and back upon itself at 8 and the bent back portion 9 thus provided is disposed against the coated face of the outer' overlapping edge 5. When thus bent the protective coating extends around so much of the edge 6 as is exposed within the can. This not only forms a continuous coating about the inside of the can but also eliminates the raw edge therefrom which, in addition to possessing the disadvantages already set forth, provide a jagged or sharp edge in the can. As the ends of the edge are cut away the folding back or bending of the edge does not interfere with the construction of the connection between the cover and body. When the solder is applied the enamel of the two parts fuses together and the coating is thus made continuous.
It is thou ht that the invention and many of its atten ant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and arent that various changes may be made In the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without depart ing from the spirit and scope of the inven tion or sacrificing any of its material ad- 'hereinbefore described being merely thereof.

A container comprising a body formed of a sheet provided with aprotective coating on the side of the sheet forming the internal surface of said container, the edges of said sheet being secured together in a lap seam, the inner of said edges being bent back upon itself and closed Within the seam, and the outer edge of the sheet being applied fla-t on the outer tainer beyond said bent-back edge.
3. A container comprising a sheet 'of metal secured along its edges in a lap seam,

4. A container of the lap seam of material provided with a protective coating applied previously to the formation of the container, the inner of the lapped portions having an outwardly doubled edge and said coating being continuous Within the finished can.
