JOHN HOTHERSALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIG- 0R TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, UF NEW YGRK, N. Y., CORPORATION JERSEY.
CONTAINER.
'Speccatiou of Letters Iatent.
Patented. A iig. 141, 1917.
' Application iled June 7, 1915. Serial No. 32,489.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lknown that I, ,JOHN M. Ho'iiiniisALL- a citizen of the United States, residing in rooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Containerajof which the. following is a specification.
My invention relates in eneral to containers and has more 'artcu ar reference to containers adapted or the packaging of powder or pulverized material, suchras talcum powder'and the like.
provision Vof such a container vmade without solder and having aside-seam interlocked container, being so constructed that a bottom lcrimped thereupon and embracing the side seanibeneath the interlocking portion will not\permit leakage of the. contents.-
- A further object'of the invention is the provision of a non-leaking container for pnlvei'ized materialsf wherein no bulky connection between the side edges of the .body will be inclosed or l A. still further object ofthe invention is ,the provision of acheap, durable and simple container of pleasing appearance.
u' ivention will'be Aid erstood from parts shown are of the general form and configuration ofthe oval talcnm powder boxes commonly in use. The body 10 is formed of a sheet cut'to a suitable blank 13. My inh4 vention relates to the oriiiationof the container body and its connection with 'the bot-l ton wall 12, and therefore only the lower portion of the blank 13 is shown. .At one' bottom corner this blank is notched at L1 and is notched also at 15 at the other bottonicorner in a diilei'ent form of notch. The notch 14 extends upwardly of the bottom edge a A principal object of the invention is the above the notch. The notch 15 is provided embraced with the seam `in the bottom.
Figure 1 is a container embodying my invention; V l
Fig. 2 is a partial View of a blank from which the body of saidcontainer is formed;
Fig. 3 shows the blank folded and ready for bending into the form of the body;
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the blank in the form shown in Fig. 3 and looking from the top end of this blank;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the finished container; y I
Figi. 6 is a. perspective enlarged view show invt e formation of the seam; and
Awith an inwardly extending tongue 18 posi tioned midway its length, and the adjacent longitudinal edge of the blank is folded back upon itself on the dotted line :19. It is again folded on the dotted ,line 2O and inwardly on the dotted line 21 to form a pocket or recess 22, as seen iii Fig. 4, in which may be en aged the hook edge 17 of the other side to orm the body. The dotted lines 20 and 21 extend upwardly from the side edges,V of the tongue 18 and this tongue is preferably ofsulicient length to extend downwardly benea ,h the edges intox-locked through the engagement of the hook 17 in tongue 18 extends downwardly to the bottom edge 23 of the blank so that it may be considered that instead of av single notch 15 v'two notcfies 15 and 23, one on cach side oi the tongue, are provided. 'The tongue 18 is not bent greatly in the formation of the can and only the edges of the blank have been interlocked, which is disposed as is shown in 6.' l fter the blank has been formed, as just described, and the edges intcrlocked, the
7 is a. section taken substantially on' the line 7--7 of Fig. 5.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown it embodiedlon the drawing in a container comprising an oval body 10, a sifter top 11 and a bottom 12. .The
saine is attened down as indicated inrFig.
7 into a tight interlocking connection. The bottom 11 is crimped. or otherwise secured f in place with the tongue 18 extending into the seanilY the body of the bottom being preferably disposed close to the lower end of the interlocking connection. be'tjveen' lthe vvide edges of the body blank. l-Jhen thus corr strueted'end arranged it will be 11a-'intent 174hat the tongue 1S prevents leak-age between the 5 ends offthe side edges of the blank loe beneath their interlocking connection.l this lwithout requiring the formation of a bulky or unsightly spot in theieonneetion between the body and the bottom. In seenr- 1'9 ing the bottom in place the tongue is held in `tight metal to metal Contact with the ndja- .cent fcesgof the edge portions of the blrnl: .so that [powder cannot seep through be tween-these edges and beneath the inter1ock -15 ing connection. v' tis thought that the il'nention und man)T .c of its attendant advantages will be undertpod from the foregoing description7 and ltwlv'ill be apparent that various changes may bqdlade in the forni, construction and arngement of the parts without departing 'from the spiritand Seope of the invention or aerifiein`` anyof its material advantages, he for'in ereinbefore described being merely '25 a referred embodiment thereof.
claim'f y l. A ',eontain'er comprising an interloeked side-v terminating short of an end of saidfeontainer, and an end lip in line with `3o the'semnmddisposed behind the edges of the materia-l forming lthe seam beyond' its t interlocking art andjseparate from the flange a ong each of its longitudinal e1 es. u
- ineen-e7 A container havinrr a side wall formed ol a. blank notched at. tie corners of a side, the blank :it one end being provided with a tongue i8, said blank being foldable to die pose said tongue behind. the adjacent edges of a seam at the end of the` body of said container. i
5. A container comprising a body and a closure crimped aboutA an end thereof, said body/ having Vinterlocking side edges in-g Wardly of said closure and being providedi with a tongue extending into the crimped Connection of said closure with said bodyi said tongue covering the side edges within tleerimpedconnection. i
