Be it known that I, AUoUsT H. LAND- WEI-IR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Holland, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in furnaces, and more particularly to the construction of the lower ring and bottom of the ash pit.

I-Ieretofore it has been customary to cast the bottom ring integral with the bottom plate of the ash pit and usually with braces extending between the same. Such a structure is liable to breakage in shipment and the freight rates are high thereon on account of its being bulky and inconvenient to handle.

The object of my invention is' to provide a structure that is not liable to be broken in transportation; of less weight, and more conveniently manufactured and shipped than heretofore, and to provide the device with various novel features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

The embodiment of my invention herein shown consists essentially of a base ring made of wrought iron angle bar bent into circular shape with one member horizontal and the other member projecting upward from the inner side thereof, and a cast metal bottom plate for the ash pit having a front extension and lugs on the same opposite the door frame of the casing, whereby when the door frame is placed upon the ring with its lower edge opposite the lugs suitable bolts may be inserted through the frame and lugs and the ring clamped between the door frame and the front edge of the plate extension; and in various features of construction and arrangement as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of the base ring and bottom plate for the ash pit; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of the ring and Specification of Letters Patent.

the door frame; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing an enlarged detail illustrating the manner in which the upwardly projectlng member of the ring is clamped between the door frame and front extension of the bottom of the ash pit.

1 represents the bottom of the ash pit, preferably of cast metal and of the usual shape and having a front extension l the front edge of which engages the inner side of the upwardly projecting member 2 of the base ring, which ring is formed of wrought metal angle bar having a horizontal bottom member or flange 2 extending outward to support the lower edge of the casing 3 and the ash pit door frame 4. The said extension 1 is provided with upwardly projecting lugs 5, which extend above the base ring, and bolts 6 are inserted through the door frame 7 and the lugs 5 whereby the vertical member 2 is clamped between the lower part of the frame and the front edge of the base plate. By this construction the base ring can be made of wrought angle bar; remains separate; is not likely to be broken or damaged in shipment or handling, and is very conveniently assembled and held in place when in use.

WVhat I claim is In a furnace, a base ring formed of wrought metal angle bar and having an outwardly projecting horizontal flange and an upwardly projecting inner flange, an ash pit bottom of cast metal having a front extension engaging the inner surface of the ring, upstanding lugs on the extension extending above the ring and adjacent thereto, an ash pit door frame resting on the horizontal flange of the base ring, and bolts extending through the door frame above the ring and through the upstanding lugs of the ash pit bottom, thereby clamping the upwardly projecting flange of the said base ring between the ash pit extension and the ash pit door frame.
