HENRY J. WARREN AND CARL NORDELL, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORS TO THE STAMFORD FOUNDRY COMPANY,-OF SAME PLACE.
FIRE-BOX FOR STOVES, RANGES, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,430, dated February 13, 1900.
Application filed July 11, 1898. Serial No. 685,613. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern: j
Be it known that we, HENRY J. VARREN and CARL NORDELL, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Boxes for Stoves, Ranges,&c., of which i the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to fire-boxes, but more particularly to {ire-boxes for ranges and cooking-stoves.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient sectional frame whereby the usual fire-bricks may be protected and retained in position in the fire-box and in case of injury to the frame one or more parts thereof may be removed and repaired or other pieces or sections substituted therefor with very little trouble, thereby dispensing with the usual brick-rest or grate-frame and overcoming many of the objectionable features incident to devices of this character as ordinarily constructed.
Other objects are to provide means which will permit various forms of grate-bars to be employed, to provide means which will allow proper expansion of the part-s, and to provide a sectional frame which is adapted for use in connection with various forms of stoves, ranges, dce.
The invention Will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference tol the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and then pointedV out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View, partly in elevation, of one form of range with the invention applied thereto, the section being taken on the line I I ofFig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan, on a larger scale, partly broken away, taken on the line ,II II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section through the fire-box, taken on the line III IH of Fig. 2, the pitchline only of the gears connecting the shafts of the grate-sections heilig shown. Fig. 4c is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line IV 1V of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional planl taken on the line V V of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view, partly broken away, of a portion of the sectional frame.
The casing 10 may support the usual cover or top for cooking utensils and is provided With a suitable fire-box 10% This {ire-box has suitablelugs 11, adapted to support the bricks 12, which have their lower ends rabbeted, so as to fit upon and between said lugs. A plate 18 may have its upper end secured to the casing 10 and its lower end made angular to support the end brick or bricks 14. The features thus far described, either in part or as an entirety, may be of any preferred form or construction.
For the purpose of retaining the fire-bricks in their proper position and to preventinjury to the lower edges thereof by the coal and to permit the parts to be readily removed or repaired a sectional frame, as 15, is preferably arranged beneath the bricks. As shown, this frame has an end section or bar 15a, provided with a flange 16, which is adapted to iit in a recessed edge of the brick or bricks above the same and has its outer ends rabbeted or recessed, as at 17, so as to be removably engaged by the sections or bars 18. The sections 18 have iianges 19, similar to the iiange 16 of the end section, which fit recesses in the lower edges of the bricks and have their ends 20 L-shaped or otherwise formed and adapted to rest upon the base-plates 21 of the bracket 22. The base-plates of the bracket, Figs. 2, 3, and 6,- have holes or apertures therein, through which pass the screw-bolts 23, the latter serving to rigidly hold the bracket to slotted ears or lugs 24 on the iire-boX casing. This bracket has the standards 25, whichsupport the guard-bar 26 and serve to limit the outward movement of the .ends of the side sections 18. The guardbar 26 abuts against a pendent flange 26a on the plate 13, which latter, together with the flange thereon, serves to protect the gears 27 from the heat as much as possible, the gears being rigidly held to the shafts 2S, and 28a,
one of which, as 28, has a polygonal end to permit it to be turned to rotate the shafts in unison in the usual manner. The shafts of the grates have one of their ends supported in a hanger or spacing-bar 29, so as'to pass beneath the guard-bar 26 of the bracket 22,
said hanger serving as a spacing and locking barand havin g apertured ends, throu gh which pass pins or bolts 30,whieh engage apertures in the base-plates 2l of the bracket to removably hold the hanger to said bracket, the ends of the hanger being adapted to engage the inner edges of the side sections, so as to rigidly and removably hold the same apart. By this means the parts areinterloeked, and the end and side sections of the frame are locked together and to the bracket, though instead of the bracket being fastened it may be arranged in any suitable manner and the end and side sections of the frame made to interlock with each other and be held in the fire-box, as desired.
The shafts 28 and 28 have the hubs 30 of the gears 27 secured thereto and have one of their ends supported in the hanger or locking-bar 29 and their other ends supported in the hanger 3l, which is secured to the easing by the bolts The hanger 29, as well as the hanger 3l, may have an intermediate socket 33 to permit either single or duplex gratos to be employed. These features are only referred to generally herein and form subject-matter for a divisional application filed March 10,1899, Serial No. 708,592.
The invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
lf the frame or any part thereof is to be removed, the pins 30 are disengaged from the base-plates of the bracket 22 and the hanger 29 foreedoutwardly through the opening in the fire-box easing. This releases the ends 2O of the side sections or bars 1S and will permit the grate-bar shafts to be lowered in the hanger 3l or removed. The ends 2O of the sections 1S may be forced inwardly, which will permit them to be withdrawn through the opening in the easing and will leave the end section or bar l5 free to be withdrawn, if desired. Vhen the side sections 1S are removed, the bracket 22 may be removed by releasing the bolts 23. The reverse of the operation just described takes place when the parts are to be placed in position in the fire-box.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the Darts of the frame may be readily removed for repairs or for other purposes, that the bricks are retained in position and their lower edges protected, and that provision is made for the proper expansion of the parts.
Then the corners of the casing are rounding, the side sections 18, as Well as the baseplates 2l of the bracket, may be cut away to conform to the contour of the casing or otherwise made to fit therein, and where it is found desirable some of the parts maybe dierently constructed or some of the parts dispensed with and others substituted therefor without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a device of the character described, a frame comprising interlocking end and side sections adapted to engage the lower edges of the fire-bricks to retain the same in position, and a removable hanger and spacing-bar connecting one end of the side sections and holding the same in fixed relative positions, substantially as described.
2. A frame for fire-boxes,comprising an end "bar or section provided with rabbeted ends,
side sections fitting the rabbeted ends of the end section, a bracket forming a support for one end of the side sections, and means for spacing the side sections apart and locking them to the bracket, substantially as described.
3. A frame for fire-boxes, comprising an end section, interlocking side sections or bars removably engaging the end section, a bracket forming a support for one end of the side sections, and a hanger forming alocking-bar to rigidly lock the sections together and to the bracket, substantially as described.
4. A frame for fire-boxes,comprisingan end section or bar provided with rabbeted ends, side sections or bars fitting the rabbeted ends of the end section, the said sections having iianges adapted to engage the lower edges of the tire-bricks to retain the same in position and prevent injury thereto, a bracket forming a support for one end of the side seetions and a hanger forming a locking-bar to removably loek the sections together and to the bracket, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a fire-box casing having lugs thereon to support the fire-bricks, andan end plate havinga pendent fiange and forming a support for the brick or bricks at one end of the fire-box, of a sectional frame adapted to retain the bricks on the lugs and prevent injury to the lower edges thereof, one member of said frame having a guardbar abutting against the pendent flange of the plate, and means for removably locking the sections of the frame together, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a fire-box casing having means for supporting the fire-bricks therein, of an interlocking sectional frame adapted to retain the bricks on their supports and prevent injury to the lower edges thereof, and a removable hanger serving as aloeking-bar and forming a portion of the frame, substantially as described.
