To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BERKMAN,
` a subject of the Emperor of Germany, re-
siding at Cleveland, inthe county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements` in File- Holders, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to an improvement in file holders comprising the construction and arrangement of parts substantially as herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view partly broken away of the holder and a file therein in working position on a saw. F ig. 2 is a sectional view of the holder with the file end clamped between the jams. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sectionsv of Figs. V2 and l, respectively. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lower clamping jaw.
The holder consists of a rectangular head 2 made of sheet metal stampedA or otherwise formed into a flat-sided tube closed o n -all sides except at its ends and centrally lengthwise thereof at its bottom where a relatively narrow open space or slot 3 is provided having a depth equal to the downwardly-extending flanges or lips 4 forming inte-gral portions of the head, and said head is also provided with a rearwardly-extending tongue 5 at its top for attachment of handle 6.
Head 2 removably seats a pair of rectangular jaws 7 and 8 in superposed relations, the upper jaw 7 being relatively smaller in cross section but of the saine length as the lower jaw 8, and like V-sliaped channels 9 are provided longitudinally and centrally in the meeting faces of both jaws to receive and hold the angular end l() of a file .ll or other tool,l see ig. 2. The lower and larger Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
Application filed February 8,1915. Serial No. 6,693.
jaw 8 is also provided with a relatively large V-shaped groove 9 longitudinally at its bottom parallelly opposite the bottom slot 3 in" the head, whereby a three-cornered file ll is adapted vtobe clamped between said jaw and the bottom of the head with one of its iat faces l2 exposed the full length of said slot. Clamping'of the 1jaws and theV le is effected by a thumb-screw through the top of head 2.
- When the file is secured in position in the bottom of the head as shown in Fig. Al, jointing of the teeth a saw is easily acycomplished and the ril( is held true and secure on a horizontal plane and cannot tur-n or tilt in the head.I and the file may also be adjustably placed to extend more or less to the front or rear as convenience or requirements may dictate.
When the end of the file is clamped between the jaws the file isv relatively nearer the longitudinal axis of the handle and a straight forward thrustV may beobtained without any material tendency of the holder to turn in the hand.
What I claim is:
14 extending A file holder comprising a hollow head I having a. bottom slot longitudinally thereof with shoulders laterally at the top thereof, a pair of clamping jaws in superposed relations therein having opposed channels in their meeting faces and the bottom jaw having a groove in its bottomface opposite said slot and adapted to rest on said shoulders, and means to press said jaws into clamping relations withinV the head.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BERKMAN. "Witnesses: V
