The side walls of the shuttle may then be sprung slightly outward to' admit the reel and the bosses Glenarm, in the county of Sangamon and thereon, the walls readily returning to their State of Illinois, have invented new and normal position when the bosses 8 have enuseful Improvements in Tatting-Shuttles, tered the corresponding depressions in the of which the following is aspecification. reel. I My invention relates to improvements in a In the other sembodlment of my shuttle a tatting shuttles, and has for its object the projecting shaft on boss 7 extends out from provision of a simple and inexpensive deeach side of the reel, which boss is adapted vice of that character upon which the thread to fit into a hole or depression on the inner ma be easily and speedily wound, and walls of the shuttle, thus centering the reel which will be provided with means for pickin the shuttle. I. provide simple and novel ing out knots which are known to fremeans for winding the thread on the thread quently occur in the process of making lace reel. Numeral 11 illustrates a cut-away porby this method. a tion in each of the walls of the shuttle on With the. above and other objects in view, one of the edges thereof, the cut-away pormy invention consists of the new and useful tion extending down slightly lower than construction and arrangement of parts, the outer periphery of the disks 5 of the reel. 0 which will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the attached drawings, and pointed out specifically in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein 5 the preferred embodiment ofmy invention is illustrated, like reference characters refer to like or corresponding parts, throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tatting shuttle constructed to embody the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my tatting shuttle. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the thread reel. Fig. 4 is another adaptation of the thread reel. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a shuttle constructed to embody my invention, and provided with the'thread reel shown in Fig. 4.
eferring now more particularly to the drawings, numeral 1 designates the main body of the tatting shuttle, which comprises two side walls tapered from the center toward the pointed ends. The ends 2 and 2 of the shuttle are preferably solid, end 2' being provided witha pin 3 securely fixed therein,
Numeral 4 designates the thread reel in genera, it comprising a pair of parallel disks and a spool formed therebetween and integral therewith. Bosses such as- 8 are provided on the inner walls of the shuttle, which bosses are adapted to enter depres- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. 1 )ILL, a citizen of the United States, residlng at ural movement of the thumb, while the shuttle is held in the same hand, the thread entered in hole 10 of the spool 6 may be wound about the spool, by revolving disks 5 with the thumb; To facilitate this movement of the reel, the edges'of disks 5 may be milled. It will also be seen that since my thread reel is removable, the same may also be filled by Winding the thread thereon after withdrawing the reel from the shuttle, the side walls being sprung slightly by the operator to permit the removal and replacing of the reel. The pin 3 provides a necessary implement to pick out knots as they occur in the thread during the process of making lace, the pin being securely fastened in one of the points of the shuttle by any suitable means.
From. the foregoing description, it will be readily seen that my invention provides a simple and inexpensive tatting shuttle upon which the thread may be readily wound, and in which is incorporated a novel means for picking out knots in the thread.
While I have herein described and illus trated the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be restricted thereto, except for such limitations as the claim may import, as it is obvious that the details of construction may be varied in many ways.
