Application filed J u1y` 5,
To all 'whom it may conce/rn.:
Be it known that I, FRANK Mossnnne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbins, of which the following is a Vspecification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of yarn package holder such as a cop or bobbin, more particularly adapted to be used as a yarn package holderfor braiding machines, and has for its object to provide such a package holder preferably formed entirely of metal, the same comprising a tubular body portion having a metal disc-shaped head at one end thereof, which head is provided with a plurality of radially disposed teeth cut at intervals from the stock of the plate and bent down to 'stand at right angles to the plane of theplate and set radially with respect to its center thereby providing a set of teeth on the head, each of which is the same on both of its opposite faces so as to control the rotation .of the holder in either direction when receiving or dispensing yarn.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved yarn package holder showing a head on one end of the body portion thereof.
Figure 2 is the same as Figure 1, showing a head on opposite ends of the body portion of the holder.
Figure 3 is a view of the under face of the head of the holder.
Figure a is a section on linea- 4 of Figure 3, showing one of the teeth as cut from the Y stock and projecting downwardly from the face of the plate. f
Figure 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Figure 3 illustrating one of the teeth as cut from the stock and turned downwardly at right angles to the face of the plate from which it is cut.
Figure G shows the center portion of the headplate as being turned outwardly to form a collar into which the end of the tubular body is fixed.
It is found in practice of advantage to 192s. serial no. 649,502.
provide a yarn package holder entirely of metal, forming a body portion of a piece of tubing and the head of a 'sheet metal dise;
also to form a hub or collar portion from which are set radially with respect to the` center of the plate and alsot'eeth whose side faces are set at substantially right angles to the plane of the head-plate, whereby'the` holder is adapted `to be rotated in either direction; and the following is a detailed description of one means by which a device of my improved construction may be made:
With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the body portion of a holder which is preferably formed 0f a short length of metal tubing, andthe head member 11 is also preferably formed of sheet metal cut into disc shape, vthe middle portion of the disc member being pressed inwardly as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, as at 12, to form a collar or hub, into which the end of the tube is pressed, or this middle portion may be turned outwardly, if desired, as at 13, see Figure 6, to receive the end ofthe tube, and this tube may be fixed in this collar by brazing or other desired fastening means.
In order to provide the necessary teeth onV this'head-plate, I have cut portions of the stock of the plate at intervals about its face and have bent the out portions outwardly forming teeth 14 which set at right angles to the plane of the face of the head and radially with respect to the center of the head, both faces of these teeth presenting flat surfaces to the engaging pawl (not shown) whereby this holder may be controlled equally well while being rotated in either direction, which is of advantage particularly when called upon to operate in certain kinds of ma` chines. Y
It is also found of advantage to punch or cut these teeth from the stock of the plate so that their outer edges 15 will set a short distance inwardly from the periphery of the plate so as to leave a continuous, unbroken ring about the periphery of the plate, which construction strengthens the teeth and offers the minimum weakening effect to the headplate.
renate In some instances, the tube is provided with a plurality of ribs 1G arranged about its periphery by forcing outwardly portions ot the stock of the tubing, for retaining a paper cop when positioned on the holder.
My improved construction of holder is very strong and durable, is simple and practical, and is effective in its operation.
The foregoing description is directed'sole ly towards the construction illustrated, but
I- desire it to be understood that I reserve thev privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susct-iptiblev1 the invention being defined and limited only by theterms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A yarn package holder having a tubular body portion and a metal disc-shaped head-plate secured to one end thereof, said platehavin-g radially-disposed spaced-apart relatively broad faced teeth out from the stock of the plate'and bent down `from the plane'thereof into operating position, the outer edges of the teeth being spaced a short distance inwardly from the periphery of said head-plate.
2. A yarn package holder having a tubular body portion to one end of which is secured a sheet metal disc plate having a plurality of radially disposed' relatively broad faced teeth cut at intervals from the stock of the plate With their outer edges spaced a short distanceinyvardly romthe periphery of the plate and bent down to stand in a plane at right angles to that of said plate.
3. A yarn package holder having a tubular body portion, a metal disc-Shaped headplate having a collar termed from the stock of its Center portion of said plate in which the end of said tube is tixed, said disceplate having a plurality of radially disposed relatively broad faced teeth cut at intervals from the stock ot the plate and bent to stand at right angles to the plane ot the plate.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
FRANK MOSSBERG.
