2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
ERNST METZNER, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
BRUSH.
Application filed March 8, 1915.
To all whom t 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, ERNs'r METZNER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at 1615 Sixteenth street in the city of Racine, county of Racine, State of Wis consin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brushes and particularly to hair brushes and otherbrushes employed for personal use.
The objects of my invention are to arrange the brushes in a series of separate longitudinal subdivisions and to provide a hair parting tooth at the outer terminal of each subdivision.
These and various other objects I accomplish as set forth in the following specivication and as more fully and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which several embodiments and adaptations of my invention are shown.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of one form of my improved brush; Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the brush shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of another form of my improved brush in which the bristles sections are made removable from the handle; Fig. I is an edge view of the form brush shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the brush taken on line -5, Fig. 3, to illustrate the dovetail interlock between the bristles sections and the handle; Fig. 6 is a perspective detached view of the frame of one of the bristles sections; Fig. 7 is a plan view of another form of brush in which a solid unslotted back is provided and the bristles sections are secured thereto on the under surface in parallel longitudinal separated arrangement; Fig. S is an edge view of the form of brush shown in Fig. 7; and Fig. 9 is an enlarged transverse section through the brush shown in Fig. 8, taken on dotted line 9 9 in said Fig. 7.
In referring to the accompanying drawings in detail in which several forms, embodiments and adaptations of my invention are illustrated, like numerals, letters, characters, and symbols designate corresponding and like parts.
In the form shown'in Figs. Y1 and 2, my improved brush has a back comprising a terminal handle 1, a medial transverse solid portion 2, and a longitudinally-slottedt Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.

terminal portion extending from the portion 2 on the side opposite the handle and having a series of slots 3 which subdivide said portion and provide a plurality of longitudinal extensions or tines 4 in parallel separated arrangement in which the bristles 5 are mounted and suitably secured in longitudinal subdivisions.
The outer extremity of each parallel eX- tension or tine 4 is bent laterally and tapered to form a hair parting tooth 6, particularly as shown in Fig. 2 which is located at the outer end of the brush opposite the handle and serves to part the hair at the desired place coincidently with the brushing thereof.
In the form shown in Figs. 3, 4L, 5, and 6, the brush back is constructed in a plurality of separate sections or parts, the handle being in one piece and each extension or tinebeing in a separate piece which is detachably secured to the handle by fitting the ilid of said extension in a socket in said han- Referring to Fig. 3, the separate handle is represented by 7 and the transversely enlarged portion at the inner end thereof by 8.
A transverse row or series of grooves of dovetails 9 are formed in the under surface of the portion 8, which are at equi-distances from each other and in parallel longitudinal arrangement. These grooves or dovetails extend to and through the inner end edge of the portion 8, and terminate at their opposite ends at a short distance from where the handle begins as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8.
The extensions of tines, or as I may term them, the bristle sections in this form of my improvement are constructed in two sep arate parts, an outer frame 10, and a base 11 in which one end of the bristles 12 are embodied and firmly and removably secured, said base being adapted to have sliding movement in the frame in assembling or dismounting the brush.
The frame is preferably formed of thin sheet metal or other suitable material and has a laterally-extending hair-parting tooth 13 at the outer extremity thereof, and a curved spring-locking strip 14 at the'opposite or inner extremity.
It will be noted by referring 'to Figs. 3
and 4; that the base, when properly fitted in the frame, has a projecting portion 15, shown 1n dotted lines in said figures, which is adapted to conform to and seat snugly in one of the grooves or dovetails 9.
To loclr the bristles section to the handle, l preferably `form a transversely-extending recess edged part 16 at the top of the trans` verse portion 8, which is of a curved form in cross section, as shown in Fig. et, over which the curved strip le springs as the portion 1:5 is Vfitted in or Withdrawn from the dovetail.
The base 'll may be constructed of rubber or any other suitable material.
ln the term of my invention shown in Figs. 7. 8, and 9, the back and handle are constructed in one integral piece of metal or other suitable material, the handle which is represented by the numeral 7 in these igures, being oi"- conventional forni, and the back lil being solid and unslotted except at its outer extremity opposite the handle where a series of equi-distant short longitudinal recesses or slots la are formed to provide separated terminals 2O 1which are bent laterally at their outer extremities and tapere l constituting hair-parting teeth 2l.
rlhe under suriace of the back is provided with laterally-extending longitudinal flanges arranged in parallel pairs, and the bases in which the bristles 2li are ernbedded are litted between the members of the pairs oiE ilanges 22, as shown in Fig. 9. The bases in this form ot my invention or, in fact, in any form of the various forms thereof, may be constructed ci' rubber, Wood, Celluloid, rubber or any other suitable and desifable material.
.in my impr-dyed brush the handle is located at one end thereof, a transverse ronT of hair-parting teeth are arranged at the opposite end. and a plurality of bristles sections are provided between the handle and teeth.
ln parting brushing` the hair with my improved brush, the end teeth are utilised to separate and pr 't the hair at the desired point. and the bristles or brush portion proper to smooth. the hair, both operations taking place simultaneously, as the brush is moved relatively to the head.
lllhile l have illustrated and described several terms of construction for carrying my invention into effect, these are capable oic a Wide range of variation, alteration,
modification, and change without departing from the spirit of my invention, l therefore do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described but desire to avail myself or all such variations, alterations, modieations and changes as 'fairly fall Within the scope of the appended claims or may be construed to be Within the scope thereoil by invoking the doctrine of equivalents.
lh-at l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
l. A brush comprising a body having .an intermediate Wide portion, a handle proj ebting :trom one end of said Wide portion, andi a series of hair parting `teeth arranged in \a transverse rouv at the opposite end of the Wide portion, and a plurality of bristles sec tions attached to the Wide portion of the body, said bristles sections corresponding in number to the hair parting teeth and each section being in longitudinal alinernent With one of said teeth..
2. A brush comprising a body haring an intermediate Wide portion. a handle projecting from one end oit said Wide portion., and a series oit' hair parting teeth arranged in a transverse row at the opposite end of the Wide portion. a series of longitudinal flanges arranged in pairs on the under side of the Wide portion of the body, suitable bases secured between the lianges of each pair and bristles embedded in and projecting from said bases; said bases being equal in number to the hair parting teeth and each extending in longitudinal alineinent with one of said teeth with. the bristles proj ect-ing laterally therefrom in approximately the saine general direction as said teeth.
3. A brush comprising a back., a pluralitv ot bases secured to said back in parallel separated longitudinal arrangement, bristles embedded in and projecting from the bases, a handle extending from one end ot the back and a series of hair parting teeth extending from the opposite end of the baclz in a trans verse ron', said teeth corresponding in num ber to the bases and each extending in longitudinal alinenient with one oi? the bases.
il. A brush of the class described having a handle, a back provided with H anged parts and a series o t independent bristles sections each separately secured in one of said flanged parts and consisting of" an outer frame, a base removably mounted in said frame bristles embedded in and projecting from said base. and a hair-parting tooth extending laterally trem the outer extremity of the outer frame.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto ait- {if/:ed my name in the presence o1". tivo Witnesses.
