To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL I. GINSBURG,
a "citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new-and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective'device of this character having an adjustable jaw, which may be readily adjusted upon the work in the ordinary manner, said adjustable jaw being so mounted as to cooperate with the work when said wrench is swun in one direction to turn said work, and a so to slip freely around the work when the wrench is swung in the opposite direction.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a wrench including an adjustable jaw provided with an adjustingmeans ofthe ordinary character whlch is slidable coincident with the jaw to permit the latter to move within certain limits, whereby the wrench may be turned without removing the same from thework-in a manner similar to' a ratchet wrench.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a stationary jaw and an adjustable jaw, the latter being capable of, adjustment in the. ordinary .manner, and the adjustable means being slidable with the adjustable jaw, but normally held in the direction which will force the adjustable jaw toward the stationary jaw, and having means controlled by "the handle for looking or holding the adjustablejaw in its adjusted position.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the thereof, portions thereof being left in eleva- Specification of Letters Patent. In carrying out my invention as here embodied 2 represents the housing or head of the wrench having formed therewith "the statlonary jaw 3, and in this head is fitted the shank 4 of the movable jaw 5. On the inner edge of the shank is formed the teeth or sectional .screw threads 6 with which meshes the adjustin screw 7. Said adjust- 1ng screw is journa ed upon the spindle 8, one end of which is of greater diameter than the body to form a head 9 which produces a shoulder 10 adapted to engage one end of the adjusting screw 7. The head 9 of the spindle is slidably mounted in' the hole 11,
while the body 8 passes through a hole 12 in alinement with the hole 11, and the opposite end normally rests in the cavity 13 in which is situated the spring l lcoiled about the spindle 8, the latter havin a nut 15 threaded on its end against whic rests one end of the spring. The nut 15 is free to slide within the cavity 13. The spring 14 acting upon the nut 15 normally forces the spindle 8 outward, so that its head 9 draws the adjusting screw 7 toward the cavity 13, and since said adjusting screw is in mesh with the sectional threads on the shank of the adjustable jaw, said adjustable jaw' is normally forced toward the stationary jaw 3 03 the work onwhich the wrench :is being use l I 16. denotes the handle in the form of a ,le-
Oneedge of the handle is provided with a notch 19, the walls of-which coact with the stop 20 carried by the housing to limit the movements of said handle. In the opposite edge of the'handle 16 is set the spring 21 held in place by some suitable fastening -means such as screws 22. The opposite or free end of said spring coacts with a portion of the head or housing to force the handle 16 in that direction which will bring the toe 18 into contactwith the adjusting screw 7. I
In practice the movable jaw is adjusted to the size of the nut or other work to be operated upon by the proper manipulation of the adjusting screw 7, the spring 14 holding the jaws in a firm but yielding contact with the nut, when by pulling upon the handle 16, in that direction which will bring the toe 18 into contact with the adjusting screw 7, said adjusting screw will be locked or held in its normal position, thus locking the adjustable jaw and preventing the same from moving lengthwise, and when all of the parts are so locked, the wrench is operated in the usual manner.
By reversing the power onthe handle 16, the toe 18 will be disengaged from the adjusting screw 7, thereby unlocking the latter, leaving only the pressure -of the spring 14 to hold themovab'le jaw in contact with the work, and by further moving the bandle 16 the same will cause the head to be moved, and as the movable jaw 5 contacts with the edges or high parts of the nut, said movable jaw will be forced away from the work, and the adjusting means will slide coincident therewith against the action of the spring 14, giving it all the effects of a ratchet wrench.
A wrench made in accordance with this description will perform all the functions of a number of other wrenches, such as the monkey wrench, the open end wrench and the quick acting jaw wrench.
Of course I do not wish to be .limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
l. A wrench including an adjustable jaw, an adjusting means, a spring for normally forcing the jaw toward the work through the medium of the adjusting means, said adjusting means being slidable coincident with the jaw, and a pivoted operating handle provided with means to coact with the adjusting means for holding the adjustable jaw against the work.
2. A wrench including an adjustable jaw, an adjusting means, a spring for normally forcing the jaw toward the work through the medium of the adjusting means, said adjusting means being slidable coincident with the jaw, a pivoted operating handle provided with means to coact with the adjusting means for holding the adjustable jaw against the work, and means for limiting the reverse movement of the handle.
3. A wrench including an adjustable jaw, an adjusting means, a spring for normally forcing the jaw toward the work through the medium of the adjusting means, said adjusting means being slidable coincident with the jaw, a pivoted operating handle provided with means to coact with the adjusting means for holding the adjustable jaw against the work, means for limiting the reverse movement of the handle, and a spring for normally forcing the handle toward its holding position.

In a device of the character stated a head providedwith a stationary jaw, an adjustable jaw provided with a shank, the inner edge of said shank being provided with sectional threads, an adjusting screw meshing with said sectional threads, a spindle on which the adjusting 'screw' is journaled, said spindle being slidably mounted in the head and provided with an enlarged portion to form a shoulder for coacting with the adjusting screw, a jaw threaded on the opposite end of said spindle, a spring coiled about said spindle, one end thereof resting against a portion of the head, and the other end resting against said nut for normally forcing the spindle outward and through the medium of the adjusting screw normally forcing the adjustable jaw toward the stationary jaw, a handle pivoted within the head provided with a locking toe adapted to coact with one end of the adjusting screw and having a notch in one edge thereof, a stop carried by the head and registering with said notch for limiting the movements of handle, and. a spring carried by the handle and coacting with the head for normally forcing the handle in that direction which will cause the locking toe to engage the adusting screw.
A wrench including a head, provided with a stationary jaw, an adjustablejaw slidably mounted in said head, an adjusting screw for adjusting said adjustable jaw, a spindle slidably mounted in the head, on which the adjusting screw is journaled, means for normally forcing the spindle outward to force the adjustable jaw toward the stationary jaw through the medium of the adjusting screw, and a pivoted operating handle adapted to hold the adjustable jaw against the work through the medium of the adjusting screw.
6. In a device of the character stated a head provided with a stationary jaw, an operating handle pivoted ,thereto, an adjustable jaw slidably mounted in thehead, a spindle also slidably mounted in said head, means for normally forcing said spindle outward, and an adjusting screw journaled on said spindle and coacting with the adjustable jaw, whereby the latter may be adjusted, said operating handle coacting with the adjusting screw to hold said adjustable jaw against pressure thereon.
7. A wrench comprising a head, a stationary jaw projecting from said head an adjustable jaw slidably mounted in said head, an adjusting means also slidably mounted in said head and coacting with the adjustable jaw for actuating the same toward .or away from the stationary jaw, means for normally forcing said adjusting means in that direction which will force the adjustable jaw toward the stationary jaw and thereby hold said. adjusting means stationary with relation to the head while the adjustable jaw is being adjusted and .a

9. A wrench comprising a head, a stationary jaw projecting from said head, an adjustable jaw slidably mounted in said head, a rotatable adjusting means slidably mounted within the head and eoacting with the adjustable jaw whereby the latter may sition against the work.
