AIR-CIRCULATING SYSTEM.
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, VICTOR-E. MER'rz, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State inafter described and claimed.
of New York, have invented new .and useful Improvements in Air-Circulating Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for humefying air as it is admitted into a building and it consists in the novel features here- An object of the invention is to provide a humefying apparatus of simple and durable structural arrangement having its parts so assembled that they maybe readily adjusted,
. to increase or diminish the humid condition of the air breathed. I
With the above object in View the apparatus includes a pipewhich leads in through the wall of a building from the exterior thereof and which is provided at theoppo site sides of the said walls with doors or valves adapted to' regulate the quantity of air admitted into the said pipes. Spraying devices are located in the pipe. and are adapted to spray the humidity into the air in the form of sprays or very fine particles. A draining drum is connected with the said pipe and means is provided in the said drum livery pipe and may be projected more or less into the draining drum to increase or diminish the volume of the flow of air through the delivery pipe.
It is to be understood that while the apparatus is primarily designed to be used for the purpose of humefying air it may also be used for the purpose of sterilizing the same. The apparatus may also be used for the purpose of deodorizing air or for imparting a particular odor or scent to the same.
In the accompanying drawing :F igure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same, cut on the line 3 -3 of Fig. 2. The apparatus comprises a pipe 1 which passes through a wall 2 and air is conducted Specification of Letters Patent.
through the pipe 1 from the exterior of the building of which thewall 2 forms a part to the interior thereof. The pipe 1 is provided at its end beyond the outer side of the wall 2 with a hinged door or valve 3 which may completely close the end of the said pipe or mayv be positioned to regulate the flow of air through the pipe 1. The pipe 1 is provided at a point within the wall 2 with an opening 4 at the edge of which is hinged a door or valve 5. The said door 5 may completely close the opening 4: or may be swung away from the said opening to any desired degree, thereby regulating the quantity'of air which may enter the pipe 1 through the opening 4.
Spraying nozzles 6 are located in the pipe 1 and preferably arranged concentric therewith 'as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A liquid supply pipe 7 is connected with the nozzles 6. A draining drum 8 is connected with the inner end of the pipe 1 and is preferably conical in shape as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. connected with the drum 8 approximately which is the more remote from the drum and the pipe 8 is provided at intervals along its length with cone-shaped nozzles 11 through which the air from the pipe 10 may be admitted into the interior of a building.
A sieve 12 is, movably mounted in the inner end of the pipe 10 and may be projected into the drum 8 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The said sieve is provided with a pin 13 which passes through a slot 14 disposed longitudinally in the pipe 10. By adjusting the pin 13 along the slot 1l-the sieve 12 may be moved in the pipe 10 and extended to a greater or less degree in the drum 8 and as the openings at the sides of the sieve 12 are uncovered the transverse sectional area of the admission-end of the pipe 10 is increased; consequently means is provided for increasing or diminishing the pass through the pipe 10. The rods 17 pass through the sides of the drum 8 and are provided at their outer endswith handles 18 which'may be used for moving the rods 17 longitudinally whereby the plates 15 may be swung and positioned at a desired angle. The handle 22 may be used for moving the rod 21 longitudinally whereby the plates 19 may be swung upon their pivots consequently the plates 20 may be positioned at desired angles with relation to vertical planes passing through the pivots -2O. i
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: Assuming that one or both of the doors 3 and 5 have been opened to a desired extent anda liquid is forced through the, pipe 7 and nozzles 6 into the pipe 1, the
passage of the said liquid from the nozzles 6 through the pipe in the direction of the drum 8 creates a partial vacuum in the pipe g 1 which draws the air in through the opening 4, -or'.,if the said opening is closed throughthe end of'the pipe'which isnor- 1 mally closed by: the door 3. This air follows the sprays from the nozzles 6 and when .it arrives at the nozzles it takes up the spray and conseqiiently the air is humefied.
"Should the. air absorb an excessive amount of moisture the said moisture will condense or collect upon the plates 15 and 19 as the current of air passes between the said plates and from the said platesithe moisture will.

A humefier comprising a pipe adapted to direct a draft of air, means for injecting 30 moisture into the same, a conical drum connected with the pipe, a drain for the drum, deflector plates pivotally mounted in the drum in cruciform relatlon, an outlet pipe connected with the drum and a sieve movably mounted in the outlet pipe and adapted to be projected into the drum.
