GREAR I-IIILPOT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FORE GRIP FOR GUNS.
Application filed May 7, 1915.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GREAR HILLPOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fore Grips for Guns, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to gun grips, and more particularly to the class of fore grips for shot guns.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a grip of this character wherein the hand of the user of the gun is prevented from contact with the barrel of the latter, which becomes heated due to the repeated ring thereof, thereby protecting the hand from the heat present in the barrel.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a grip of this character wherein the same will be maintained cool, thereby avoiding the heating thereof from the barrel of a gun when being used, resultant from the continued firing of said gun, and also which grip will be maintained cool at all times.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a grip of this character which is simple in construction, novel in form, reliable and efficient in its purpose, and ineX- pensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing Figure l is a side elevation of a gun showing the grip constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates the stock and B the barrel of a gun, which are of the usual well-known construction, while formed on the stock A is an extension 5 which is directed forwardly beyond the trigger and its guard for a distance to lie beneath the barrel in the ordinary Specification of Letters Patent.

well-known manner. Formed on this eX- tension at the proper point thereof is an enlargement 6 providing a rightmand left hand grip convenient to the user df i 1 n, the upper side of the enlargement 6 being provided with a recess forming an air circulating or cooling chamber 7, while opening through the opposite or under side of the enlargement 6 and communicating with the recess or chamber 7 near opposite ends and at diagonally opposite points relative to each other are air passages 8 serving as inlet and outlet openings for air to and from the chamber or recess which is next to the barrel, thereby maintaining the grip coolA to keep it from getting hot from the heat of the barrel resultant from the repeated firing of the gun at short intervals of time. The upper portion of the enlargement 6 at opposite sides of the barrel B is formed with guard ribs 9 which form cheeks for the sides of the barrel to prevent the fingers of the hand of the user of the gun from contacting therewith, and thereby shielding the fingers from the heat of the said barrel of the gun.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and purpose of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is In a gun having a stock provided with an extension, an enlargement on said extension at the free end thereof and having an air chamber in its upper side and also having air passages opening through the under side at diagonally opposite points near the ends of said chambers for communication therewith to permit the circulation of air therethrough, and ribs formed on the upper side of the enlargement at opposite sides of the chamber to provide guard cheeks for the barrel of the gun, the said enlargement on its outer surface being serrated.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GREAR HILLPOT.
