Description
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE. c
EDWARD WIARD, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO BENJAMIN F.
' AVERY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 117,024, dated July 11, 1871.
To all whohzl it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WIARD, of Louisville, in the county of Jeii'erson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Plow; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, rei'- erence being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view oil my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a perspective view ofthe standard and land-side plate. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the standard, the land-side plate, and the skeleton support for the share and moldboard. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the combined point and share.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several ligures.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements on the construction of turn-plows; and consists: lst, in a wrought-iron standard and wrought-iron land-side, welded together and adapted for separate light points. 2d, in a skeleton frame adapted for iirmly uniting the point and mold-board to the land-side and standard in a very substantial manner, and also aii'ording a means `for securing in place the mold-board handle, as will be hereinafter explained.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will explain its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a wrought-iron standard, which is concave in front, convex behind, and extended forward at its lower end into a point, a, which is perforated transversely at b and b3. B is the land-side, which is made of wrought-iron, of proper thickness, length, and width, beveled at c, and iirmly welded to the standard A so as to lap over the same, as shown in Fig. 2. The standard and land-side thus form a single piece, having' a vertical shoulder at g, of a thickness corresponding to the thickness of the land-side portion B of the standard and the land-side portion D of the share or point D. G represents a skeleton frame, which is made of wrought metal or of malleable cast metal, pressed into proper shape to receive upon it and afford substantial though a very light bed for the mold-board O. This frame G is constructed with lugs or lips o, 19', p, p, and 1L a on its edges, as shown in Fig. 3. The lugs 0, p', a, and n receive bolts through them for securing the frame to the standard and land-side, and also for securing the share D and mold-board C to the frame. The lugs p p, which are bent downward from the mold-board, receive bolts through them, which secure the mold-board handle to the said frame. In Fig. 3 the perforations t' 'i receive through them the bolts which are used to secure the mold-board O to the frame G. The share D, with its pointed end and its land-side portion D', is secured by bolts to the frame-lug p and to the tapering point a of the standard A. All of the bolts whose ends are exposed on the outer sides ofthe plow are countersunk into the metal so as not to leave raised surfaces. V
It will be seen from the above description, Fig. l, that when the point or share is secured in its place the rear end of the land-side portion D of this share lits snugly against the shoulder at g, and leaves the external surfaces flush, while the extended portion c of the standard A ai'ords a firm support, both laterally and vertically, for the share.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The standard A with extended support a and with land-side B united thereto and terminating at g, leaving a shoulder for the plow-point D', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The frame G, constructed with lugs p19, bent and adapted to receive through them bolts which secure the mold-board handles to the plow, substantially as described.
' Witnesses: EDWARD VVIARD.
HENRY H. McDoUGALL, JNO. O. CooNLEY.
