Description
S. H. RICHARDS.
BOOK STAND.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 6. 1915.
1, 169,869. Patented Feb. 1 1916 STEPHEN H. RICHARDS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOOK-STAND.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHE H. R1011- ARDS, a citizen of 'the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookveniently held in the hand. The device is especially adapted for the use of copyists, who ordinarily require both hands to operate a typewriter, and yet have frequent occasion to write from notes, or make quotations from text books.
The feature of this invention resides in the simplicity and cheapness of the device, wherein adjustments and movable parts are eliminated, the stand preferably having one end adaptedfor the holding of a note book and the opposite end for the holding of a heavier printed book, and being self supporting and easily moved around when in use.
The invention is shown in several forms herein, wherein-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stand embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a modified form; Fig. 4 is an elevation of another modification; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of Fig. 4.
As shown in all of the figures, thestand is made of a single strip 1 of metal, which is intermediately bent at 2 to provide two supporting surfaces 3, 4, then further bent at 5 to provide feet 6, 6, and then reversely and upwardly bent to provide clips 7, 8. The support 3 and clip 7 are preferably constructed to receive an ordinary stenographers note book, which opens at the end,
- Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 6, 1915. Serial No. 54,298.
tionaries, and the like, from which a copyist is to make quotations. The clip 8 is of such length that the leaves of the book can be easily turned over when desired and yet not cover the lower lines of printed matter at the bottom of a page. feet 6 as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 on the left end, an extended base is formed which prevents overturning. In Fig. 3 the extended base is formed on the side which holds the heavier book, and also in this figure is shown a stiffening brace 10. An extended foot construction can be applied to either or both ends, as may be desired, and these ends may also carry pads of felt 01 other material, as shown.
In Fig. 4, a modified form is shown more especially intended for users of telephone books, directories, etc., in which the supporting back 13 is bent to provide a bottom support 14, a rear support 15 and a rear foot 16, which may be so bent as to form a transverse trough in which to retain pencils, etc.
In this form, the book is fastened to the stand by a wire 17 which passes through and locks in a curved slot 19 in the upper end of the rear support 15.
From the foregoing description the uses and convenience of the device will be seen, and it will'also be seen that there are no mechanical adjustments necessary and that the device can be cheaply produced in large quantities. These devices will also be manufactured so that when packed for shipment they will nest, and thereby save transportation expense.
Various modifications and changes maybe made in the specific construction herein shown, and in material, without departing from the scope of the appended claims Having thus described my invention, I declare that what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A book stand comprising a single strip intermediately bent to provide inclined supports and end supports, one of said ends being extended and bent back adjacent one of said inclined sides to form a clip for holding an open book.
2. A book stand comprising a slngle strip intermediately bent to provide a plurality of inclined book supports and end supports, each of said ends being extended and reversely bent close to the adjacent lnclined supports to form clips for holding open to form a clip for receiving and holding an books of respectively 'diflerent character. open book. 10
3. A book stand comprising a single strip In testimony whereof I aflix my signaintermediately bent to provide a. plurality ture, in presence of two Witnesses.
5 of inclined book supports and end supports, STEPHEN H. RICHARDS.
one of said ends being horizontally ex- Witnesses: tended and then reversely and upwardly BEN A. MATTHEWS,
bent adjacent one of said inclined supports J. S. Woosrnn.
