xrrn s'ra'rs PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN KOLIBAS, OF MCKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
MILITARY WEAPON.
Application filed June 25,
T all whom it may concern: H v
Be it known that I, JOHN KoLmAs, a citi- Zen of the United States, and residing in the city ofiMcKeespoi't, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered new and useful 1mprovements in Military Vveapons, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a new and improved military weapon comprising a combined sword and fire-arm for ofiicers and cavalry use.
The object in view is to provide a practical weapon which may be used for cutting and thrusting in the usual manner, while at long range or in the last extremity it may be used as a fire-arm. The attainment of this object has been previously attempted but the result has been the impairment of the efliciency of the weapon for either purpose and the production of an arm which is lacking in accuracy in either field.
Generally speaking, my invention comprises a sword blade provided with a longitudinal rifle bore and to the butt of which is hinged a hilt. A cartridge cylinder is mounted on the butt of the blade in alinement with the rifle barrel, while the firing mechanism is mounted in the hilt. lVhen the hilt is locked in alinement with the blade the weapon may be used instantly either as a sword or revolver without any adjustment or change and may be used for cutting and shooting at the same time. if necessary. Means are provided for locking the hilt securely in its closed position, so that the weapon is not in any way weakened or its efficiency impaired as a sword.
Other novel features of structure and arrangement of parts will appear from the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved weapon with the hilt closed and locked; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation showing the hilt broken, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on enlarged scale of the blade butt and hilt and the adjacent parts, the hilt being shown closed.
The following is a detailed description of the drawings. A is the sword blade provided with a longitudinal bore 1 which is preferably rified and forms the barrel of the weapon. B is t e hilt frame whose inner portion is for s a revolver frame and V Specification of Letters Patent.

pivoted to the bottom of the butt of the blade A 1n a manner similar to which a revolver frame is pivoted to its barrel, 2 indicatingthe pivot pin. 3 is a curved guard preferably provided to protect the hand of the soldier, and having one end secured to the butt of the hilt and the other end secured to the hilt at or adjacent to the pivot point. 4 is a blade guard which extends along each side of the butt of the blade from the cutting edge and across the top of the blade to prevent the sword of an adversary sliding over onto the hilt and also serving for a firing sight. The back of the sword blade is provided with a rearwardly extending, broadened barrel extension 5 under which is mounted the revoluble cartridge cylinder C on a pin 6 fixed in the butt end of the blade A. 7 is the usual extractor. The barrel extension 5 is provided with a catch 8 which engages the projecting lugs 9 of the hilt and holds the latter closed. 10 is the cylinder catch mounted on the barrel catch in the usual manner. 11 is the spring seated pin which looks said catches against accidental engagement. The hilt B is provided with the firing mechanism of a revolver comprising the trigger 12, trigger guard 13, cylinder revolving latch 14, hammer 15 and sear 16 interposed between the hammer and the trigger. The hammer is actuated by the coiled spring 17 concealed in the hilt grip 18. 19 is the firing pin mounted on the hammer 15 and adapted to explode the cartridge in the top chamber of the cylinder G. The upper, exposed end of the hammer 15 is provided with a hooked locking head 20, which, when the hammer is at rest, engages the barrel catch 8 and holds it down in place, so that no blow given by or received on the blade or hilt will cause the hilt to accidentally break or open. the hilt being held rigid with the blade. To break the hilt it is necessary to first draw back the locking head with the fingers, so that accidental opening of the hilt is impossible.
The weapon may be used as a cutting and stabbing arm or as a fire-arm with extended hand or raised to the eye and sighted. Its usefulness in a melee is very evident as no shifting or adiustment of parts is required in changing the use of the arm, nor any marked change in presenting the weapon toward the enemy. The combined nature of the weapon does not impair its efficiency for either function and the fire-arm mechanism is well protected from accidental injury. The balance'of the weapon as-a sword is not impaired, and the cost of the combined weapon is less than the aggregate cost of a sword and a revolver, thus saving 'not *on-lvin the weight of equipment of the soldier but in the cost of thesame.
What I desire to claim is A combined sword and fire-arm "comprising a*- sword hladegprovided "witha -longi tudinalgun barrel, a cartridge c ylinder revoluloly mounted on" the bnttof said blade in 'al'inement witlrsaid barrel, a rvolver frame 'pivotally connected to said butt, locking means" for holding said frame in its closed pos1t1on, fir1ng1neans carried by said frame, a hand hllt rigid With said revolver frame and, when the latter is closed, extending in "alinement with said sword blade, and an of June, 1915.
