To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JASPER F. HEoKMAN, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of .Henryville, in the county of Monroe and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. I

The primary objectof my invention is to provide a holder into one end of which may be sprung a suitable broom head to be removably clamped therein, so that when the broom headis worn out, the same may be removed and replaced by a new broom head.

-Another object is to provide a broom holder including two equiform shells ar ranged to be heldin divergent spaced relation, and between which may be clamped a broom head in such a manner that the head may be easily removed when worn out.

With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claim, it being further understood that changes in the specified structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention. In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and'in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 shows a side elevational view of a broom embodying my invention with parts of the handle or stem broken away. Fig. 2 shows a view of the two equiform members. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3, 3, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows a modification with parts broken away. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5, 5, of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows a modified form of the clamping annulus. Fig. 7 is a section on line 7 7 of Fig. 4, and also represents a section through the handle-forming stem of Fig. 1.

In my present invention I provide a household broom so constructed that the handle and receiving head will be practically indestructible, while the broom or whisk is removably secured to the holding member in a manner permitting the same to be replaced.

In carrying out the aim of my invention I employ two equiform sheet metal members shown in Fig. 2, each comprising a sheet Specification of Letters Patent.

As shown in Fig. 2. one of the members, as the one marked 4, is provided with a plurality of ears 5, which serve to prevent lateral displacement of the members One of the handle members, as the one marked 4, is provided with the openings 6, 6, while the opposite member 4', is provided with the threaded lugs 7, suitable bolts 11 passing through the openings 6, and screwing into the lugs 7 to securely hold the half-tubular handle-forming stem together. The lugs 5 prevent lateral displacement, while an annulus 8 is sprung into the collars 3 after the members are secured to prevent lengthwise displacement.

The members 1 and 1 are held in slight divergent spaced relation, and each is provided with a plurality 'of parallel extending grooves a, of gradually reduced depth as shown in Fig. 1, these grooves being arranged in sets. As shown in Fig. 2, the grooves are formed in dishing the metal inward to provide a plurality of ribs at their opposite sides and these ribs perform a double function in that they serv to pinch into the broom head A upon opposite sides, and upon the outside form seats, for an annulus or collar 10, as shown in Fig. 1. The

grooves a of each set are a progressively greater distance apart, as shown in Fig. 1.

The broom head A is made of a predetermined size and has its upper edge rounded so that the same will snugly fit between the divergently held shells 1 and 1. After the broom head A has been inserted the annulus 10 is forced into one of the sets of grooves a, to securely pinch the shells upon the broom head in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 3. After the broom head is worn out it is simply necessary to pry out of its seat the annulus 10 when the shells can be spread a distance sufficient to permit the withdrawal of the worn broom head and the insertion of a new one.

As shown in Fig. 1, the shell members are provided with an opening 50, so that the broom may be hung upon a nail or hook.

In Figs. 4 and 5, I show a modification in which the shells are plain, the broom head A being secured by means of the bolts which pass through the broom head and into suitably threaded lugs 21 shown in Fig. 5. In this modification in order to remove the broom head A, the screws 20 must be removed. The half-tubular handle-forming stems 16 are connected by means of suitable bolts 11.

Instead of an annulus 10, shown inFig; 1 a two part clampingcollar 17 may-beused having the ears 18, through which pass suitable connecting bolts 19.

In Fig. 7, I have shown one of the bolts 11 connecting the handle-forming stems.

A broom constructed according to my invention is light and durable and the broom can be readily removed and replaced with ease, accuracy and despatch.
