UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. MANSFIELD, OF ORANGE GROVE, MISSISSIPPI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO TORVEL TORGERSON AND ONE-THIRD TO MARVIN G. HANSON, BOTH OI IRVING- ToN, ALABAMA.
PACKAGE-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1916.
Application filed May 4, 1915. Serial No. 25,744.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. Mans- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange Grove, in the county of J ack son and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to package ties, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple device for use with certain classes of mail matter, which will not project from the package, which will be easy to tie and untie, and which can be used over and over again.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a package confined within a tie made in accordance with this invention, the package tie being shown partially in section, Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plate and the spring members connected thereto.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a rectangular plate of thin sheet metal having connected thereto and extending therefrom flat arms 2, said arms being connected to the plate 1 by suitable fastenings 3, said arms 2 at their outer ends being each cut away at 4 to form a skeleton clasp 5, having a spring tongue 6 which is adapted to be pressed into the cut away portion 4.
The package tie comprises two strips of elastic webbing 7, and said elastic Webbing at each end thereof is provided with a socket member 8, said members each having an opening 9 therein to receive the spring tongue 6.
The socket members 8 are connected to the ends of the webbing 7, and when brought around a. package a are pushed onto the skeleton members until the spring tongue 6 engages the walls of the opening 9 in the socket members to hold the elastic webbing 7 firmly connected to the package.
It will be obvious that only two of the socket members 8 which are arranged at right angles in relation to each other, need be disconnected from the spring members 5 to remove the package from the tie, and when it is desired to place another package in the same two spring clasps need be unfastened.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a device made in accordance with this invention lies flat on the package, will occupy but little space, cannot readily become detached, is simple in construction, may be manufactured at low cost, and is strong, durable and efficient for its purpose.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim.
What is claimed is A package tie comprising a rectangular plate, a pair of intercrossing arms secured to and extending from each corner of the rectangular plate, said arms provided with anelongated slot therein, a tongue formed on the side of said arms intermediate the ends of the elongated slot and adapted to engage a socket carried by an elastic webbing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM M. MANSFIELD.
