warm VBze MARVIN V. BAXTER, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 GEORGE W. ZINEMERMAN,'OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.-
FOLDING CAMP-STOOL.
Application filed June 21, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN V. BAXTER, a v
citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Camp- Stools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a folding camp stool and in particular to a camp stool in which the movable parts are made of heavy steel wire.
It is an object of my invention to devise a folding camp stool which is extremely light in weight yet strong and durable, simple of construction and easy of operation.
Another object of my invention is to construct a folding camp stool which can be folded twice upon itself so that it is very convenient for transportation, being easily carried about by hand or packed away as it occupies in its folded condition but little space.
These and other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds and will be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification I have shown a convenient and practical embodiment of my invention and in which like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure l is a perspective of the folding 4 camp stool in its open position. Fig. 2 shows a front View of the same when it is almost closed. Fig. 3 shows a perspective of a modified form of the camp stool. Fig. 4 shows a frontal elevation of the same in its folded position. Fig. 5 shows a side view of the same in its folded condition.
On a horizontal metal rod 10 are pivoted a pair of diagonal supporting membersv 11 and 12 which are preferably made of heavy steel wire. These diagonal supporting mem- J bers are of the general shape of a rectangle but their longest sides are slightly bent outwardly as at 1415 where they connect with the smaller sides in order to provide a larger base and seat, respectively. The wire of thediagonal supporting members is bent to form an eye at the middle of the long sides which pivotally engage the outer ends of horizontal rodlO. Two sets of collars 16 and 17 secured to rod 10 adjacent to the eyes engaging said rod retain said eyes in their seats on the rod. A foldable seat is Specification of Letters Patent.

secured to the upper short sides of the diagonal supporting members in any preferred manner. I have shown the same to consist of canvas but it is obvious that any other suitable material may be used and even hinged solid seat members may be substituted therefor.
The bottom side of the diagonal member 11 is provided with a pair of recesses or notches equi-distantly spaced from the ends thereof. These notches are preferably made by bending the wire at these places slightly upwardly. A U-shaped bottom brace 18 extends inwardly from the short side of diagonal member 11 and is secured thereto by means of eyes formed on the outer ends of the legs thereof which pivotally engage the notches in the bottom side just referred to. The bottom side of diagonal supporting member 12 is provided with similar notches which are engaged by a U-shaped bottom brace 19. The inner ends of the legs of brace 19 are bent upon themselves to form eyes 20 which engage the transverse member of the U-shaped bottom brace 18, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. I preferably bend the wireof which bottom braces 18 and 19 are made slightly upwardly at the place where the same engage the bottom sides of the diagonal supporting members 11 and 12 thereby forming a small notch or recess adapted to hold the transverse member of U-shaped lateral supports 21 and 22, respectively, in position when the camp stool is in'its open position, as shown in Fig. 1. The U-shaped lateral supports 21 and 22 extend vertically downward from the upper sides of the diagonal supports to which they are pivotally secured. The width of the lateral supports is approximately equal to that of the bottom braces, thereby securing a firm structure, preventing any lost motion when the camp stool is in its open position.
It will be understood that any load placed on the seat will tend to spread the diagonal supportingmembers apart. This tendency is opposed by the bottom braces 18 and 19 which limit the outward movement of the diagonal supports. The lateral supports 21 and 22 are held in position not only by the notches on bottom braces 18 and 19, respectively, but also by the tendency of the diagonal supports to move outwardly, which in turn firmly holds the bottom braces in a horizontal extended position.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification of my camp stool which is similar to' the construction of the camp stool shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the exception of the diagonal supports and the lateral supports. Each of the diagonal supporting members is composed of two sections 11 and 11 and 12. and 12 which are U-shaped in form, the outer end of the legs forming an eye pivotally engaging the horizontal rod 10 at its outer ends. Each of the lateral supports is likewise made of two sections, 21 and 21 and 22 and 22 The upper sections 21 and 22 are made of a length corresponding to that of the sections of the diagonal supporting members. In forming the trans verse member of the U-shaped upper sections 21 and 22 the wire is bent upon itself form ing a pair of eyes 23 to which links 24: are secured at one end and which'engage the eyes formed at the outer ends of the legs of the lower section of the lateral support.
When it is desired to fold the camp stool it is only necessary to press the lower ends of lateral supports 21 and 22 inwardly toward each other. The ends will move toward each other and in doing so will lift the inner ends of the bottom braces l8-19 upwardly while at the same time the diago nal supporting members swinging on their pivots will approach each other and the camp stool will occupya folded position, as shown in Fig. 2. It should be noted that the 7 camp stool shown in Fig. 2 has not yet reached its extreme folded position. The diagonal members may be made to approach each other until they lie in close contact with one another.
The modified camp stool shown in Figs 35 allows not only of the folded position just described but also allows the diagonal supporting members and the lateral supports to be folded upon themselves by reason of the sectional construction of said members. When folded, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, one pair of links 2 f will be above and the other pair of links 24 will be below the horizontal rod 10, as shown in Figs. 4C and 5.
I claim:
1. In a folding camp stool, the combination of a frame made of steel wire, said frame comprising a central horizontal rod, diagonal supporting members pivoted to the outer ends of said rod, said diagonal members being of the shape of a rectangle, the short sides thereof forming the top and bottom, respectively, a folding seat extending between the upper sides of said diagonal supporting members, av pair of U-shaped bottom brace members, said brace members being pivoted at the ends of the lateral sides thereof to the bottom sides of said diagonal members at points spaced equi-distantly Copies of this patent may be obtained for members at points equi-distant from the ends thereof, the width of said lateral mems bers corresponding to that of said brace -members, the transverse sides of said lateral members passing below and engaging the ends of said brace members adjacent to the bottom sides of said diagonal members.
2. In a folding camp stool the combination of a frame made of steel wire, said frame comprising a central. horizontal rod, diagonal supporting members pivoted to the outer ends of said rod, said diagonal members being ofthe shape of a rectangle, the short sides thereof forming the top and bottom, respectively, a folding seat extending between the upper sides of said diagonal members, a pairof U-shaped bottom brace members pivoted to the bottom sides of said diagonal members, the transverse sides thereof being in interlockingengagement with each other, a pair of vertical lateral U- shaped supporting members pivoted to the upper sides of said diagonal members, the
transverse sides of said lateral memberspassing below and engaging the ends of said brace members adjacent to the bottom sides of said diagonal members.
3. A folding camp stool comprising the combination of a frame made of steel wire, said'frame comprising a central horizontal rod, diagonal supporting members pivoted bottom, respectively, a folding seat extending between the upper sides of said diagonal members, a pair of U-shaped bottom brace members pivoted to the bottom sides of said diagonal members, the transverse sides of said brace members being in interlocking-engagement with each other, a pair of upper lateral U-shaped supporting members pivoted to the upper sides of said diagonal the lower lateral supporting members with the inner ends of said upper lateral supporting members.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
MARVIN V. BAXTER.
