Be it known that I, JOSEPH LiNDBunG, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve-ments in Type- Vriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and has particular reference to means whereby labels or other relatively small work-pieces may beremovably connected to a vrevoluble platen to be linespaced thereby.
The invention is applicable in those cases where the work-piece on account of its small size, is incapable of support upon the platen and of feeding thereover by aid of the usual feed rolls; the improvement consisting of means disposed at one end of the'platento clamp the work-piece upon thev platen surface to revolve with the platen; the clamping means being of such character that they may pass the feedl rolls, if necessary. rlhe clamping means, however, which are op# erated by a pivotal-lever, having intermediate connections whereby said clamping means may be released from the platen sur,
face, are engaged by said lever with the platen frame or carriage to be thereby held at rest while the platen is rotated in the ordinary operation of the machine with work-sheets of a size operable with the usual feed rolls.
lThis invention comprises a work-piece clamp which can be rendered operative or inoperative by the\movement in opposite directions of a lever, and which when not in use, is non-interfering with the usual operation of the machine.
lVhen the invention is applied to a typewriting machine of usual construction, the platen isshortened at one end to provide space for the introduction of the necessary mechanism between the platen end and the platen frame. Where shortened, the platen has an extending hub carrying an annular, beveled disk; a clamping plate, which lies upon the platen surface, having depending members to frictionally engage said disk; and a lever pivoted upon a sleeve or member supported by said hub, said lever serving when operated in one direction to draw the plate into clamping relation with the pla-ten surface in any rotative position of the platen relative to said plate, and to frictionally connect its depending portions with said disk, whereby the platen and clamping plate will rotate together; and detaining means upon the platen frame for said lever when rocked in the opposite direction to release the clamping plate, whereby said clamping plate will be held stationary while the platen is rotated freely in the performance of its usual work.
One of the members depending from the clamping plate is bifurcated to form legs which straddle the aforesaid hub, said legs at theirlower ends being pivotally connected with the shank of a yoke-like link, whose opposite arms are respectively pivotally connected with the arms of abellcrank, which is fulcrumed to the hub; said bell-crank comprising the operating lever before referred to, and being preferably bgifurcated for pivotal connection at opposite sides of the hub, its bifurcate members uniting ,to form an operating finger piece.
A light spring presses the operating lever normally between retaining fingers or other engaging means rigidly mounted upon the machine to normally hold the operating lever at rest with the clamping plate released from the platen.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective front elevation of a platen, showing the label or other work-piece clamping plate and the operating means therefor. Fig. 2 is a partial detail View, showing the platen end, and, in vertical section, showing the hub with the flange and sleeve thereon, also the casing therefor. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the hub and sleeve being herein shown in full lines, with the operating lever and the clamp as released from the platen. Fig. 4 is an end View. partly in section, through the line 4 4: of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a similar View to that of Fig. 3, showing the clamp in operation. In the example of my invention illustrated herein, wherein it is shown applied to an Underwood typewriting machine, 1 indicates the platen, with the platen axle 2 supported by the platen frame 3 having the usual cover plates el.

the length of the platen being filled out through the clearance by an elongated hub (i, which carries an annularly disposed disk or flange 7, whose outer surface is beveled as at 8, to form a wedge.
rThe clamping means whereby a label or other work-piece may be connected to the platen surface, comprises a stiff strip or plate. as 9, extending longitudinally over a sufficient portion of the platen surface to serve the desired purpose; said strip being preferably curved transversely to enable it to conform to the platen contour, and having relatively flexible fingers 10, which may eX- tend from ar separate strip surmounted and held by strip 9. The flexible fingers 10 are intended for the purpose of gripping the work-piece securely without marring its surface. I
The plate or clamp 9 is carried by a supporting member 11, to which it is secured as by screws 12, said member 11 depending at right angles from said plate 9, and being bifurcated to form legs 13, which straddle the hub (i, said member 11 with its legs 13 lying between the disk 7 and the platen end, which may have an end plate 14. The outer end 15 of the plate 9 is bent at right angles thereto to form an overhanging arm parallel with and spaced from the member 11, that the flange 7 may enter between said member 11 and arm 15 to be wedged therein by the beveled surface of flange 7 bearing against the inner surface of arm 15, thus frictionally holding the plate 9 seated in clamping position upon the platen. at 16, that it may lieover the curved surface of the hub G, and thereby extend the available surface of said arm for frictional engaging contact with flange 7.
The supporting member 11 yis operable by means of a bell-crank havingI separated arms 17 in the form of a yoke, straddl'ing a sleeve or support 1S loose upon hub 6, and pivoted to said sleeve as at 19,; said arms 17 merging at their outer ends into a finger lpiece 20, by which said bell-crank may be manipulated; and the arms 17 at the opposite sides of their pivots, respectively pivotally engaging the yoke-like arms 21 of a link/Whose shank portion 22 is pivotally supported transversely between the legs 13 ofthe member 11, asat 23.
By reason of the lever and link connection aforesaid with the support for the clamping plate 9, the latter will be moved toward the platen surface toclamp a Workp'iece thereon, by movement of the finger piece toward the platen end; while movement of the finger piece in the opposite direction will move the plate 9 away from the platen surface, to release a work-piece therefrom, or for the purpose of introducing a workpiece under said plate.
It should be noted that the plate 9 moves to and from the platen surface in parallelism therewith, due to the fact that its right angular supporting member 11, being guided between the end plate 1l and flange 7, is thereby directed in a plane perpendicular to the platen axis. 1n this manner the clamping plate or member 9 by reason of radial movement toward and from the platen, is assured of always seating evenly upon the platen surface portion toward which it is directed, and of thereby uniformly gripping the entire interposed portion of the workpiece to be held thereby.
The operating members just described as disposed at the platen end, may be inclosed within a housing or cap, as 24, which may be connected to or integral with the sleeve 18, said cap or housing with said sleeve thus being looselymounted upon the hub 6.` The inwardly directed end of the sleeve 18 may abut against a collar 25 that is fast upon said hub, and serves as an end bearing to prevent undue frictional contact between the peripheral edge of cap 24 and the end plate 14 when the platen is rotating independently of the clamping plate 9. The housing or cap 24 has a longitudinal slot 26 inv its wall to receive and permit the operation of the finger piece 20, said slot being enlarged at its outer portion, as at 27, to accommodate the support 11, and to thereby connect the cap and sleeve with said support and the clamping plate, that these members may move in unison, whether the plate 9 be fast upon the platen or released therefrom.
It having been noted that the finger piece 20,' when moved in the direction of the platenend, has thereby operated the clamp-i ing plate mechanism to draw said clamping plate into close contact with the platen surface and to create the frictional clutch engagement whereby said clamping plate is caused to rotate with the platen in the linespacing operation of the latter, so, when the. finger piece 20 is moved away from the platen end, thereby operating the mechanism aforesaid to release the clamping plate l9 from the platen surface, leaving the platen free to rotate without carrying with it said clamping plate, anchorage means are provided in a fixed'positlon upon the platen thus thrown outwardly, whereby said finger piece with the mechanism'it controls and the clamping plate, are positively held stationary in conjunction with the sleeve and housing aforesaid while the platen is free to rotate. Said engaging means may consist of the herein-shown fork or lingers 28 extending from a strip 29 that is secured to thecover plate 4, said fork or fingers being arranged to receive the finger-piece Q0 as it moves outwardly to the releasing position.
In order that the fingerpiece 20, when thus moved tothe releasing position, may be held against accidental dislodgment therefrom, a. light .spring 30 is secured at one end to the housing 2l, and arranged at its other end to be passed by and then to bear against said finger piece. pressing the latter with sufficient tension for the-'purpose against itsi engaging seat.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. In a typewriting machine having a rotatable platen, a shaft for said platen, a support fixed to Irotate on said shaft, and means carried by said support and pivoted astride thereof, for holding the work-piece against said platen.
2. In a typewriting machine having a rotatable platen, a shaft for said platen, a support fixed to rotate on said shaft, and means pivoted upon said support for holding the work-piece against said platen.
3. In a typewriting machine having a rotatable platen, a shaft for said platen, a support rotatably mounted on said shaft, and
` means including a pivoted lever, and a link carried by said support for holding the work-piece against said platen.
4. In a typewriting machine having a rotatable platen, a shaft for said platen, a support rotatably mounted on said shaft, and means including a pivoted yoke lever mounted upon said support, a link connected to said lever, a clamp, and a supporting member for said clamp connected to said link.
5. In a typewriting machine, a rotatable platen, a shaft for said platen, a support' fixed to rotate on said shaft, means carried by said support for holding a work-piece against said platen, and a device mounted on said platen shaft adapted to be frictionally engaged by said means.
6. ln a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a hub at one end of said platen, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a work piece clamp, and a link and lever connection between said sleeve and clamp to move the latter into and out of effective position.
7. In a typewriting mach-ine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a work-piece clamp, connections between said sleeve ancl clamp to move the latter into and out of clamping relation with the platen and a wedge-surfaced disk between the clamp and the platen to maintain the two in adjusted relation to each other.
8. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a hub at one end thereof', an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a work-piece clamp, connections between said sleeve and clamp to move the latter into and out of clamping relation With the platen, and frictional means upon the platenshaft toY engage said clamp when seated.
9. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a `revoluble platen, a hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a work-piece'clamp, connections between said sleeve and clamp to move the latter into and out of clamping relation with the platen, and a beveled flange on said hub to frictionally engage said clamp with said platen when seated thereon.
10. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a Work-piece clamp, and a lever fulcrumed on said sleeve to move said clamp into and out of clamping relation with said platen.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a hub on one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a Work-piece clamp, a lever fulcrumed on said sleeve to move said clamp into and out of clamping relation with said platen, and a finger-piece tooperate said lever.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a work-piece clamping plate extending over a portion of the platen surface, a support for said plate movable perpendicularly to the platen axis, and a lever fulcrumed 0n said. sleeve to move said clamping plate into and out of clamping relation with said platen.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a Work-piece clamping plate extending over a portion of the platen surface, a support for said platemovable perpendicularly to the platen axis, a lever :t'ullll'.

14. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, an elongated hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a work-piece clamping plate extending over a portion of the platen surface, a support for said plate movable perpendicularly to the platen axis, a bell crank fulcrumed on said sleeve, and a link between said bell crank and clamping plate support, whereby said clamping plate may be moved into and out of clamping relation with said platen.
15. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, an elongated hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a work-piece clamping plate extending over a portion of the platen surface, a support for said plate movable perpendicularly to the platen axis, a bell crank fulcrumed on said sleeve, a link between said bell crank and clamping plate support, whereby said clamping plate may be moved into and out of clamping relation with said platen, and a finger-piece to operate said bell crank. 16. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a rotatable platen, an elongated hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a work-piece clamp,
operating means therefor, an extension upon said clamp movable therewith and into and out of frictional engagement with said hub, to connect said clamp to said platen when in clamping relation therewith, for rotation in unison, and to disconnect it therefrom when released from clamping relation, to permit relative movement of said platen and clamp.
17. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a work-piece clamp, connections between said sleeve and clamp to move the latter into and out of clamping relation with the platen, and an extension upon said clamp movable therewith and into and out of frictional engagement with said hub, to connect said clamp to said platen when in clamping relation therewith, for rotation in unison, and to disconnect it therefrom when released from clamping relation, to permit relative movement of said platen and clamp.
18. In a typewriting machine, in combi nation, a revoluble platen, an elongated hub `at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a workpiece clamp, operating means therefor, a beveled flange on said` hub, a right angular extenvsion upon said clamp movable therewith and into and out of frictional engagement with said flange. to connect said clamp to said platen when in clamping relation therewith, for rotation in unison, and to disconneet it therefrom when released from clamping relation, to permit relative movement of said platen and clamp.
19. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, an elongated hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a liange on said hub, a work-piece clamping plate extending over a portion of the platen surface, a support for said plate movable perpendicularly to the platen axis, said support being bifurcated to straddle said hub and being guided between said flanges and the platen end, a bell crank fulcrumed on said sleeve, and a link between said bell crank and clamping plate support, whereby said clamping plate may be moved into and out of clamping relation with said platen.
20. In a. typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, an elongated hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a flange on said hub, a work-piece clamping plate extending over a portion of the platen surface, a support for said plate movable perpendicularly to the platen axis, said support being bifurcated to straddle said hub and being guided between said flange and the platen end, a bell crank fulcrumed on said sleeve, a link between said bell crank and clamping plate support, whereby said clamping plate may be moved into and out of clamping relation with said platen, and a finger-piece to operate said bell crank.
21. In a typewriting machine having a revoluble platen, the combination of means, supported rotatably upon the shaft of said platen, a lever pivoted upon said supporting means, a work clamp, and a connection between said lever and work clamp whereby the lever may be made tol put the clamp into and to withdraw it from operative position. In a typew-riting machine having a revoluble platen, the combination of means, supported independently of said platen, for releasably clamping a work-piece to the platen, a linger-piece for moving said clamping means into and out of operative position, and fixed retaining means to engage said linger-piece when the latter has moved said clamping means to released position.
23. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a platen frame, an elongated hub at one end of said platen, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a work-piece clamp, a lever fulcrumed on said sleeve to move said clamp into and out of clamping relation with said platen, a finger-piece to operate said lever, and an anchorage in fixed relation with the platen frame to engage said linger-piece when the relation with said platen, to thereby hold said platen, and means pivoted upon said sleeve for applying said clamp to and releasing it from the platen surface.

In a typewriting machine, in/combination, a revoluble platen, a work-piece clamp extending over a portion of the platen surface, a sleeve upon said shaft, and means pivoted upon said sleeve and movable in one direction for simultaneously applying said clamp to the platen surface and connecting it with the platen to rotate therewith, said means also being movable in.the op'- posite direction to simultaneously remove said clamp from the platen surface and disconnect it from the platen, whereby said platen and clamp are separately movable.
Q6. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a work-piece clamp extending over a portion of the platen surface, a sleeve upon said shaft, means pivoted upon said sleeve and movable in one direction for simultaneously applying said clamp to the platen surface and connecting it with the platen to rotate therewith, said means also being movable in the opposite direction to simultaneously remove said clamp from the platen surface and disconnect it from the platen, whereby Said platen and clamp are separately movable, and a fingerpiece to operate said'clamp applying and removing means.
27. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a work-piece clamp extending over a portion of the platen surface, means movable in one direction for simultaneously applying said clamp to the platen surface and connecting it with the platen to rotate therewith, said means also being movable in the opposite direction to simultaneously remove said clamp from the platen surface and disconnect it from the platen, whereby said platen and clamp are separately movable, a finger-piece lto operate said clamp applying and removing means, and an anchorage to engage said finger-piece when the latter hasmoved said clamp to disconnect it from ythe platen and out of clamping relation with the platen surface, to thereby hold said clamp at rest while the platen is rotated independently thereof.
28. In a typewriting machine having a revoluble platen and an axle therefor, the combination of a sleeve mounted free to turn but not to slide upon said axle, a lever pivoted Aastride said sleeve, a work piece clamp, and
connections between ysaid lever and clamp whereby the lever when turned one way draws the clamp against the platen and when turned the other way withdraws the clamp from the platen.
29. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, an elongated hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, separated collars fast upon said hub at opposite ends of said sleeve to prevent longitudinal movement of the latter, a work-piece clamp, and connec tions between said sleeve and clamp to move the latter into and out of clamping relation with the platen.
30. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, an elongated hub at one end thereof, an independently revoluble sleeve on said hub, a work-piece clamp, connections between said sleeve and clamp to move the latter into and out of clamping relation with the platen, a housing carried by said sleeve for said connections, and collars fast upon said hub at opposite ends of said sleeve to` prevent longitudinal movement of said sleeve, housing and connections.
3l. In a typewriting machine having a revoluble platen and an axle therefor, the combination of a sleeve mounted free to turn but not to slide upon said axle, a lever pivoted astride said sleeve, a work piece clamp movable radially toward and from the platen, and connections between Said lever and clamp whereby the lever when yturned one way draws the clamp radially against the platen and when turned the other way withdraws the clamp radially from the platen.
32. In a typewriting machine having 'a rotatable platen, a shaft for said platen, a support mounted upon the shaft to turn thereon, a work piece clamp adapted to move radially to and from the platen, and means carried by the support and connected to the work piece clamp for moving the latter radially of the platen toward and from the'platen.
33. In a typewriting machine vhaving a rotatable platen, a shaft for said platen, a support mounted upon the shaft to turn thereon, a work piece clamp adapted to move radially to and from the platen, and means pivoted astride of the support and connected to the work piece clamp for moving the latter radially of the platen toward and from the platen.
