This inventio'nrelatesto machines for cutting stencils, and particularly to the kind shown in the patent to Sterling Elliott, No. 1,378,771, dated May 17, 1921. In said patent, carbon is deposited on the rear Of the stencil-blank by means of carbonpaper, conducted from a supply-roll, placed in a cylindrical container, said container having both ends open for the insertion and withdrawal ofsaid roll. Said container is disposed above and behind the platen, the carbon-paper passing downwardly and around the platen and upwardly between the platen and the stencil-blank. As both ends of this container are open, the carbon-roll is liable to move laterally and slip out.
A feature of this invention is to provide means for holding the carbon-roll within its container, but permitting the ready insertion Or removal of the roll. p In said patent to Elliott, a device is provided for guarding and guiding the free used portion of the carbon-sheet after it advances around the platen. Referring to the drawings; a platen 10 is mounted'on a shaft 11 which is journaled in theplaten-frame 12 of the usual carriage. As here shown, the holding means comprises a pair of stationary jaw-members 17 for mounted on a shaft 19 which is positioned close to the rear paper-table 19, so that when the frame-bars 18 are, thrown rearwardly to the position shown in Figure 2,
the center of the weight of the frame will be close to the carriage. Said shaft 19 is mounted on pro ections (not shown) eXtendng rearwardly from the typewriter carriage 16. Said frame-bars are rigidly secured together by said shaft 19and. by a yoke-member 18, thus forming a rigid structure which is arranged for movement about the pivot-rod 19. Theclamping device also includes a. pair of front jaw-members 20 pivotally mounted on-said framebars 18 and arranged to engage said stencilblank 1% and hold the same pressed against the stationary jaw-members 17by means of springs 20 pressing against said aw members 17. Said jaw-members 20 are disposed above and at the front of the platenlO, so as to hold the stencil-blank 14; in a ver- .tical position against said platen 10 for reoeiving impressions from type 15.
Said aw-members 20 are mounted to be moved outwardly,said moving means shown here as a yoke 21 carried by the frame-bars 18 and loosely. mounted on a :rod 22. The ends of saidyoke 21 terminate in lateral extensions 28 extending below said jaw-members 20 and disposed to engage the same to move them outwardly and disengage the stencil-blank 14c. Said yoke 21 carries an arm 24, which arm 2% is disposed infront of an arm 25, mounted upon a cross-bar 26 arranged between the frame-members 18, so that the two arms may be grasped for rocking said yoke 21.
The stencil-blank 14, while held by the v clamping device, is arranged for movement vertically step by step, and for this purpose line-spacing means is provided. Said linespacing means includes aroll 27 journaled in an ear 28 fixed to a hub 29 mounted on a rod 30, which rod is securedat its ends to of a varying radius, so that as it is turned the frame-bars and Clamping device, supported thereby, will be raised to be held ,at different elevations. Said cam 33 is secured to a shaft 34, which shaft has secured to it at one end a hand-wheel 35 for rotating said cam and lifting the clamping device. The cam 33 normally rests against a pin 36 carried on one ofthe frame-bars 18, in which position that portion thereof of shortest radius will engage the roll 27, and, when it is desired to move the stencil-blank 14 inan upward direction, the shaft 34 will be turned to rotate said cam 33. Means (not shown) is provided for holding said cam 33 against the 1 :red pin 36.
To hold the shaft 34 against backward rotation and also in different elevated positions, a wheel 37, mounted on the shaft 34, is provided. Said wheel 37 has teeth 38 formed on its periphery, which teeth 38 are arranged to be engaged by a detent 39 formed on an arm 40 which is loosely pivoted at 41 to one of the frame-bars 18. Said detent-arm 40 is limited in its movement on its pivot by,reason of its slotted end portion 42 engaging a pin 43 carried on the adjacent frame-bar 18. The detent 39 acts toxhold the toothed wheel 37 in any position desired, but permits rotation in one direction only. The teeth 38 on said wheel 37 are arranged in groups, the teeth of each group including approximately the same are or portion of the wheel, and the teeth of each group varying in length. This provides for varying the number of lines and also for spacing the lines more or less widely apart.
After the typing operation on a stencilblank 14 is completed and it is desired to remove said blank 14, the clamping aws 20 are released by rocking the yoke 21 and the stencil-blank 14 disengaged. At the same time the line-spacing means is adapted to be operated automatically and is caused to resume its normal position. For this purpose suitable connecting means are provided between the detent-arm 40 and the clamping device, by which said arm 40 will be lifted and its detent 39 released from engagement with the toothed wheel 37 by a movement of the clamping device.
To accomplish this, said detent-arm 40 has loosely connected with it one end of a link 44, th other end of which link 44 is connected with an ear 45 formed on one of the jaw members 20, so that, upon movement of said jaw-members 20, the detent-arm 40 will be correspondingly moved and the toothed wheel 37, cam 33 and cam-shaft 34 are then free to be rotated to normal position, the cam 33 again engaging the pin 36 carried on one of the frame-bars 18.
In order that the stencil-blanks 14 may receive impressions, carbon must be deposited on the rear thereof, and, for this purpose, a strip of carbon-paper 46 is provided, which is arranged in roll-form in a cylindrical container 47 ,having both ends open for the convenient insertion and withdrawal of said roll of carbon-paper 46. Said carbon-strip 46 passes downwardly and around the platen 10 and upwardly over said container 47.
In order to hold said carbon-strip 46 on the platen 10, a roll 48 may be employed, which is loosely mounted on a shaft 49, the ends of which shaft '49 are mounted in bearing strips 50, which are extended from a sleeve 51 carried on a shaft 52. Said roll 48 is normally pressed against the platen 10 by a spring 53, and may be swung away from the platen to release the carbon-sheet 46, by an arm or finger-piece 54. Said bearing strips .50 may be extended at the other side of said sleeve 51 and arranged to pivotally support the arm 54 which extends upwardly and has a weighted end portion 55 for guiding and guarding the free used end of said carbon-strip 46. The container 47 is fastened to the curved portion 56 of a bracket 57, the lower end of which is fastened on the shaft 19 by screws 58. A pro jecting portion or stop 59, formed on the bracket 57, limits the backward swing of the frame 18.
It is a feature of the present invention to prevent the carbon-roll from moving laterally of its container 47 and slipping out of th same. To accomplish this, across-piece or bar 59 is rigidly mounted on the arm 54 by means of screws 60. Said bar 59 terminates in downwardly-extending fiangepor tions or ears 61. l i hen said arm 54 is in effective position, said ears 61, carried by the bar 59, are positioned adjacent the open ends of said container 47 and serve as ends therefor, holding the carbon-roll within the same. The bar 59 with its cars 61 together with the arm 54 and its weight 55 also serve to guide the movement of the free end of the carbon-strip 46.
\Vhenever it is necessary to insert anew carbon-roll in the container 47, the clamping device and line-spacing mechanism may be swung upwardly and rearwardly on the pivot-bar 19, the stop 59 limitin id move 3 i471. ment. The arm 54 may then be swung forwardly, by grasping the weight 55 and rocking said arm 54 around its pivotal connection with the bearing strips 50, to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2. whereby access may be had. to the container 47 for inserting or withdrawing a carbonroll.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be use-d without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a machine for impressing characters machine, of a container having both ends oven for holdino a roll of carbon-3a 361 in 1 n a 1 L c strip form, said caroon-strip arranged to be fed around said platen, a device for guarding and guiding the free end portion of said carbon-strip, and means carried by said device for holding said roll of carbon with in said container.
2. In a machine for impressing characters on stencil-blanks, the combination with the platen and the carriage of a typewriting machine, of a container having both ends open for holding a roll of carbon-paper in strip form to be fed around the platen, a device for guarding and guiding the free used end of said carbon-strip, said device arranged to be moved into or out of effective position, and means carried by said device for holding said roll of carbon-paper within said container.
3. In a machine for impressing characters on stencil-blanks, the combination with the platen and the carriage of a typewriting machine, of a container having both ends open for holding a roll of carbon-paper in strip form, said carbon-strip arranged to be fed around said platen, a device for guarding and guiding the free used end of said carbon-strip, and means carried by said device for holding said roll of carbon-paper within said container, said means being movable into, either effective or ineffective position.
4. In a machine for impressing characters on stencil-blanks, the combination with the platen and the carriage of a typewriting machine, of a container having both ends open for holding a roll of carbon-paper in strip form to be fed around said platen, a weighted arm overlying the used portion of said carbon-strip to guide and guard said used portion of said carbon-strip, and means mounted rigidly on said arm for holding said roll of carbon-paper within said container. 5. In a machine for impressing characters on stencil-blanks, the combination with the platen and the carriage of a typewriting machine, of a container having both ends open for holding a roll of carbon-paper in strip form, said carbon-strip arranged to be fed around said platen, an arm overlying the used portion of said carbon-strip to guide and guard the same,'and a bar eX- tending across said arm and mounted fixedly thereon, said bar terminating in downwardly.-projecting flange portions or ears to form ends for said container to hold said carbonrolls within said container.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of carriage, a platen on said carriage around which a carbon-strip may be fed from a supplyroll, a cylindrical container supported on said carriage for the supplyroll, said container having open ends' to enable. the supply-roll to be inserted from either end, a pivoted device to swing at right angles to the direction in which the supplyroll is inserted into the container, sai'c device having ears to serve as ends for the container to hold the supply-roll in said eontainer, means to hold said device in its effective position, and a holder for a stencilblanlr pivoted on said carriage and swingable from a lowered, forward position to an upper, rearward position, said pivot-ed device being swingable when-said holder is in the latter position, to move said ears from the ends of said container.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen on said carriage around which a strip of'material may be fed from a source of supply, a container supported on said carriage for the material supply to enable the material supply to be inserted, a feed-roll to assist in feeding the material around said platen, a finger-piece to actuate said feed-roll to release said material, and a device supported on said fingerpiece and effective to serve as an end for said container, to hold the material supply in said container, said finger-piece being pivotally supported to swing the end to give interior access to the container.
8. In a typewriting machine for impressing characters on stencil-blanks, the combination of a platen, a carriage therefor, an open container permitting the insertion therein and removal therefrom of a roll of carbon-paper in strip-form, a pair of ends for said container, a connecting piece between said ends, and means supporting said connecting piece for pivotal movement on said carriage to permit said ends to be simultaneously swung to and from closure position at said container.
9. In a typewriting machine for impressing characters on stencil-blanks, the combination of a platen, a carriage therefor, an
,open container for a roll of carbon-paper in strip-form, a pair of ends, a support for said ends mounted for pivotal movement forwardly of said container, a holder for a stencil-blank pivoted on said carriage and movable from a lower, forward, operative position to an upper, rearward position and permitting, in the latter position, the forward movement of said ends, and means for limiting the rearward movement of said support and thereby positioning said ends over the ends of said container.
